Should I have my 04.5 LLY re-flashed? Dealer said no problem, they would do it. Has 5K miles on it and runs great. Fuel mileage is 14.5 city/19 highway. No surge, smoke or knock, but I do get the pinging noise at about 1,800 RPM. Should I leave it alone or go for the re-flash? Your thoughts are appreciated!! :ro)

Had mine done a month or so ago. I didn't really have any concerns or problems either but immediately while driving out of the dealership, I noticed quicker response and smoother idle. I didn't have anything to compare it to prior to that. I'd say go for it. It can't hurt. Mileage seems to have dropped just a bit but it's much colder here too so that may be affecting mileage also.

I have 05 picked it up in november how would i tell if my truck could use a flash?

Mine is in the dealer at this moment. I told them it has an intermittent surge at low speeds (around 1Krpm). I'm hoping they will update the programming on that. The service writer seems to be all business. I asked if they would check the injector balance rates and he told me that would be another service item and if I didn't have a specific problem they probably wouldn't check. I also have the intercooler leak that I told them to look at since I don't appreciate oil on my driveway. I'll see how this goes otherwise I might be going up to Orange County and visiting socaldieseltech.

Is a reflash something considered warranty work or does the stealership charge for it? I have had no problems with mine and get around 17 mpg city and 20 on the highway.

What benefit does reflashing have?

i had mine reflashed no charge just say it surges at 1k

immediatly youll notice its quiter at idle....

well worth it however since i had it done i put the juice back in and it barks the turbo all the time, before it would do it maybe once every 30 or so times i got on it.... edge is sending me a new module and if that doesnt work i guess its getting sold because IMO its useless on my truck ever since the reflash

It's been my expierience that a trip to the dealer's service department is rarely a pleasant thing, and can sometimes be a disaster. If it's running fine, I would say leave it alone. I guess if you have a really competent dealer, I might feel differently. I've never had to take my truck back for anything yet and hope to keep it that way.

The stealer told me that my surge was the trubo kicking in and out at low speeds. WTF! Does this make sense?

My 04.5 was build in May 04. Runs like a nice Swiss Rolex. No one has had their hands on anything under the hood except the oil filler cap. Hear a lot about updating the electronics but you know, soon a someone diddles around things seems to start screwing up. May just well leave her alone. Has 10K miles so far.

But when you have a known problem and they have a TSB for it and refuse to fix the known problem with the corrective action on the TSB we have a new problem. I hear what you are saying aka108. Mine has almost 15K miles and no problems until recently. I guess that GM should issue a TSB for the failure to fix TSB issues.

Mine was bone stock and ran like a rolex, so you could imagine how scared I was to get the reflash done.

But, I’m a software freak and believe if they have a team of programmers plinking away at the chip then it must be a good thing, so I had it done - with my fingrs crossed.
I can’t believe it but it happened, it is running even better, and is giving me between 3 and 5 mpg better milage, depending on how much I tromp on it.

It does seem smoother and more quiet. I got mine in mid Feb, and reflashed it 4 weeks ago. Mileage is about the same, but the DIC seems to be way off now. Driving into work its showing 20.2 this morning, but i only got 385 trip miles and i'm slightly below the 1/4 tank mark. Realistically its been around 18.5mpg

So I take it that your DIC was correct before the reflash? Mine has always been off since new.

I have a 04.5 and I am thinking about the reflash but like AKA108, I would hate to screw up a good thing. I notice the surge but its no big deal. If you change your throttle position a little, it will stop. You brave Flashers keep us informed, you might talk us into it.

Let me be the first to say i'm not happy with the re-flash. It runs fine around town and on the hiway, but when towing my 12,000 pound 5er, it lost a lot of power. On one hill I tow on a lot, it lost a full 10 MPH! I'm fighting with GM right now to put the old flash back in, they say it can't be done. Fuel milage is the same as well. I find it hard to belive a 5 mpg gain in milage.

To All:

I have had the same issues, as have many people on this forum. I am somewhat new but to save the vets time and energy (answering the same ? over and over again) I will throw on my two cents.
When dealing with a dealership DO NOT be afraid to take your truck in and tell them "my truck is leaking oil at the intercooler, I know there is a PIP 3068B regarding these similar issues." Call me when it's fixed.

DO NOT try and be super GM mechanic and fix it yourself. Take it in and DOCUMENT your vistit. I say this because you paid a great deal of $$$$ for your truck, worst case senario..............lemon

just my thoughts

JDT, yes and the reflash cured mine, I almost sold the juice, reflashed 3 days ago, and it runs perfect with juice at level3.

I agree with you in the fact that you have to almost be aggressive, but this all comes down to the competence of the dealer. I have done exactly this..I took my truck to 5 different dealers with the PIP printed out and in hand. I told them my issues and symptoms and that I researched and found what it was. 2 of the Chevy dealers would not do the flash because I have a GMC, 2 GMC dealers told me I was crazy and there was no such PIP number and that I had the latest updates. Finally..the last and final dealer..talked directly with the diesel guy, allowed me in the shop while he worked, he looked up the number just like the rest right in front of me..found it on the FIRST try, hooked up TechII, flashed it.. done.

In my area the dealers don't want to spend the little extra time to help the customers so you may have to be a bit stern with them or even try a few dealers like I did until you get one that is competant enough to help you.

anyways..sorry to jack the thread.. just my $.02 on that matter.

Happy Holidays

Just had mine updated and there wasn't even a hesitation by the service department to flash the computer. The dealership had a flyer on the desk encouraging people to make sure their "Vehicle Software" was up to date. If it was out of warranty the cost was 105 bucks

In and out in 30 mins. Truck does have more punch and is quieter. Definately running better. All covered under warranty.

The stealership is plugging my LLY into the Tech II tomorrow to see if it needs any updates. Will advise. JJ

Are any of you that have had the re-flash using the EGR block off plate or have the EGR disconnected? Also do any of you have the Finger Stick installed? If so have you experienced any problems with these mods and the new software?

My EGR was just unplugged. I told the tech and he confirmed the codes, then did the reflash. No problem.

Just got back from the stealership and the LLY reflash. Hang on to your bootstraps boys: 85 miles @ 65 mph on 3.72 gallons = 22.84mpg.:ro) That wasn't all highway miles either! Hands down the best mpg's I've seen out of my LLY. I ran the diesel fuel up in the filler neck both times to try to refill to the same level. Somehow on the way down to the stealership I only got a little over 11mpg, still haven't figured that out though it was pretty cold this morning.

I really shouldn't call them a stealership, so far they've been great on both the vehicles I purchased from them.

Observations so far. Acceleration doesn't appear quite as abrupt, seems smoother through the gears and acceleration is consistent, less surging for lack of a better explanation. It may have been my imagination but the Allison appeared to be learning my driving habits again, not certain though since I was paying more attention to the engine.

The LLY definitely runs smoother after the reflash. No change in operating temps, none were expected. I'll keep an eye on things and advise. The truck was detailed as well, PRETTY! :D Now I need to hook the 5ver up to it and see if I lost any power. Will advise. JJ :)

I ask my dealer this morning when I picked my truck up about the reflash. At first he acted like it was no such thing and then after talking for about 15 min he went on to say it was about 20 different programs out there and it has to be something specifically wrong before they will do anything. Oh yeah this is after them having the truck for three days only to say that I might have a "injector leaking down" but its checking out fine right now.

MH, I'll try and hook the 5ver up over the weekend, first I'm going to see how hard it is to flip the overloads (MP2) and install my Rancho's. Sure wish the in-cab controller was here so I would only have to crawl under the truck one time (lazy?). :o

I'll search the forum for directions, MP2 if you have them please PM them to me. BTW, you never did tell me/us wazzup wi' dat mosquito versus Topo? Is someone having a personality conflict? Need some time on the ole DP couch? ):h The boys and I will be glad to help! :D

Mike04, just another story of either dealer laziness or incompetence, maybe both. Yesterday the tech originally wasn't going to reflash my truck. Fortunately the service advisor knew his stuff and wrote the ticket so it would be done. My receipt says "Customer states low idle surges. Check fuel regulator on live plot. Found steady line. Check for update. Found all calibration unknown-reflash PCM-warranty". I'm sure that makes sense to you tech types. JJ :)

Melvin, flash it baby! ):h Day #2 post reflash and I'm even more impressed with how the truck is running. Anyone know if the reflash also modifies the Allison? It just seems to work perfectly with the LLY now, no jerking, no hesitation, surging, nothing! I towed the 5ver 80 miles at 65 mph and averaged 9mpg, not bad considering I usually get 7-8mpg. There were a couple of times I nailed the accelerator when merging into traffic where if I had layed off it wouldn't have consumed as much fuel. A full tank would likely yield closer to 10. I'm very happy and impressed. The 5ver is sitting right around 15k lbs right now.

It is almost like I had a tow tune installed: more power throughout the entire gear range, tranny seems to hold power better, smoother shifts to. Is JJ crazy? Maybe! But 23mpg highway and 9-10 towing is a significant improvement from before the reflash. So far hats off to GM!:ro)

Other details: 68* outside, low humidity, light winds. Engine temps constant at 205*, tranny held around 180*. I filled the tank up to the filler neck each time for fairly consistent readings. Not sure why a couple of others are having problems unless somehow they were flashed with LB7 settings. The LLY is much quieter, idle is up a bit, and power is smooth/consistent throughout the entire RPM range. I was happy before, now ole JJ is sporting a Dumax chubby! Have to go put the 5ver back in storage. Later. JJ :)

I have 58000 miles on mine now. Bought it at the end of March 04. I do notice some surges at idle every now and then. May need to get mine re-flashed. I will check with the dealer this week. Then it is off to the mods. no mods as of yet.

JJ, If I had it in front of me I could tell you better. Keep in mind, I asked one or 2 auto places to flip them, some won't do it, or any suspension work, besides shocks. But I called all the spring shops, and they had no problem. After I saw what they did, I had no idea it was so easy. But I don't know about your spring pack. It well could be the same as mine except for 5 leafs, I have 4, in the main pack.

I have a 2005 chevy with 3700 miles manufactured on July 22nd 2004 and had the low speed surge. No other problems other than the surge made it annoying driving around in parking lots or in stop and go traffic. I had mine reflashed today and so far it drives much nicer no surge and seems to have more get up and go:)
