: MPG vs EGR valve ???
smirl 11-04-2007, 05:06 PM I have posted the "Done it all, still poor economy" and have had no resolve to my consistent, yet pathetic fuel economy at 13 mpg city and 16 mpg highway.
Does anyone have a knowlege base on the EGR valve influence vs. fuel economy in these California trucks?? I'm searching for anything at this point.
I drive at 1800 rpm @ 65 mph with easy start & stops. Transmission goes into 5 lock at 50 mph with no excessive slippage in any gears. Runs hard if I want it, but thats not what I want when I'm just highway cruising. Still hoping to get more than 350 miles per tank. :(
Facts:
-2002 LB7
-4" cat back exhaust
-Volant cool air intake
-Edge juice set on '3'
-285 BFG tires (calculate 10% for odometer error)
-New injectors in August 07. (no difference in mpg)
dodavison 11-04-2007, 05:25 PM my 03 gets the same with or without the egr functioning. If I had to guess why your mpg is bad it would be the larger tires draging down the engine some or your odometer is off.
Tolliwacker 11-04-2007, 08:39 PM I have the EGR valve, and it is coding a P0404 but I am still getting 20 MPG
I really wish this EGR light will go away for good!
paraman72 11-04-2007, 09:55 PM I ran 21 mpg recently coming back from NC carrying about 1500 pounds and running about 80. I got 24 mpg going down. Dont know what to say but mine is pretty much stock except for the Edge.
tator1 11-04-2007, 10:11 PM Okay...totally lost...what is an "edge" ?? STupid question...but I am a newbie
Tator
tator1 11-04-2007, 10:12 PM Can someone explain what an "edge" is . New to diesel and intrigued
kiehnk 11-04-2007, 10:15 PM The "edge" is a device that plugs into the truck computer to enhance engine performance.
Hammer 4 11-04-2007, 11:23 PM Edge is a "tuner" to up the hp output..it can also change parameters.
re: the mpg's, I run 285's and still get 17.5 in the city, But that's with my PPE tuner set on the 225 hp tune, if I drop it to the 120 hp tune, my mpg's go down 2-3 thenths. I don't see how you guys are getting 20 mpg in the city..? is this hand calculated..? or are you reading the DIC..?
Smirl, check your tire pressure, make sure brakes aren't dragging, have you changed your fuel filter lately..? how's the airfilter look..? ect. If your truck is lifted, mpg's will suffer a bit too.
Oh, are you adding any fuel additives..?
smirl 11-05-2007, 12:29 AM Hammer 4, The brakes are just fine- no hot wheels, tire air pressure at 55 psi, air & fuel filters are relatively new, Stock height- I leveled the front end to match the rear- and same mpg as my BFG 265's gave me. Sometimes I run an additive but didn't see any difference comparatively.
Hammer 4 11-05-2007, 12:35 AM Ever disconnect the Edge to see if your mpg's improve at all..? Just a shot in the dark, but worth asking..:D
Oh, and how many miles is on the truck..?
smirl 11-05-2007, 02:08 AM Yes, I've disconnected the edge and even put the original air filter assembly back on but it makes no difference either way. When I bought it last year it was bone stock. All the changes I made definately improves the performance but the mpg has not changed since day 1 of my ownership. It is really perplexing- no excessive black smoke and runs like a champ. I'm sure by now, no one is playing tricks by siphoning my fuel. Sure would be nice to get that extra 25% fuel economy like other LB7's - especially at $3.69 / gallon. Guess it's time to fire up the Suzuki Samari- just don't want to be swatted like a fly by some other guys duramax!!
Cougar GT-E 11-05-2007, 09:41 AM First off, have you tried increasing the tire pressure to the max (80 psi)? That may help, but may wear the tire centers faster.
WHen you checked the brakes, did you jack up each corner and spin the tires or just feel for heat?
Finally, how far do you drive between stops? If I only go 5-6 miles, the truck is not warmed up and the economy is about 1/2 to 2/3 of what it gets hot. I even put the front cover on when the high temps drop to the low 60's so it will heat faster and get a bit hotter. Diesels are more efficient hot. Have you driven 15 miles then fill the tank and jump on the freeway for 100 mile non-stop 60 mph run and checked milage? If that is still 13-14 you are way different from mine. Hot at 60 mph it will get 23 or so mpg.
good luck,
jb
dodavison 11-05-2007, 10:48 AM I don't know but some have said if they loosen their fuel cap they get 2-3 better mpg, maybe a defective cap and not getting air.
smirl 11-05-2007, 02:18 PM I just did a 1500 mile road trip at around 70 mph, maybe 1900 rpm with (2) XR400 bikes in the back and just the two of us. Hand calculated milage was the usual 13-16 mpg. The brakes are cool enough, I drive firetrucks for a living and know how hot brakes react, smell & feel so I'm confident about brake drag not being an issue. Loosen the fuel cap- what the heck, got nothing to loose !!!
Cougar GT-E 11-05-2007, 02:58 PM Well, this August we went from Wi to Yellowstone. 3 people and gear for 10 days. Averaging 70 mph and round trip 20.6 mpg. GM air filter, stock exhaust, stock tires (65 psi), CAT 2 micron filter after the tank, front end leveled some by cranking the torsion bars and there is a bed cover.
Have you tried spraying the air sensor with brake cleaner? There is an off chance that the sensor (in the tube after the air filter) may be dirty or oiled. That's all I can think of, sorry! Hope you get it figured out.

smirl 11-05-2007, 10:30 PM I have cleaned the MAS before. Anybody know if it would throw a code if it was going hay-wire. Any thoughts on just replacing it ??
Hammer 4 11-05-2007, 11:00 PM I have cleaned the MAS before. Anybody know if it would throw a code if it was going hay-wire. Any thoughts on just replacing it ??
Should throw a code if there's a problem with it..
I'm rackin my brain to think of what else you could try, but I come up empty handed..:o:
Maybe you should ditch the Edge, and get a PPE..? :D
If I think of anything else..I'll be sure to post it...sorry I couldn't be of more help..
Smirl, where abouts in so cali are you located..? pm if you want.
Tolliwacker 11-05-2007, 11:17 PM I have cleaned the MAS before. Anybody know if it would throw a code if it was going hay-wire. Any thoughts on just replacing it ??
Usually the MAF sensor will code a P0101 if there is a problem.
king of mex lb7 11-06-2007, 01:06 PM i had the banks 6 gun tuner , as well as the edge , and got about the same mpg as u
after wasting all my money i tride one last tuner b4 i gave up i stright pipe it and went
with ppe and put it on levle 2 and as soon as i did that i got 20mpg on hwy and 14-16
city , or maybe not trucks run the same, i am a new a new guy to the site, good luck
smirl 11-06-2007, 08:31 PM Just for fun today I Disconnected my Mass Air Flow sensor to see if this truck would throw a code. Drove about 30 miles and with NO CODE- and it ran like poop. Any thoughts on a semi-functioning computer that doesn't toss a code ?!
SKIHIGHHD 11-08-2007, 03:19 AM try getting rid of your catalitic converter and add a ppe boost increase valve.. that should give you 2-4 mpg- increase.......
