i found a 2005 2500 lly for a really good price with less than 20,000 miles on it and was wondering if there is anything special i should be looking for to tell the shape of the motor. are there any tell tale signs i should look for that indicate extreme wear or abuse, i am new to diesels and dont want to get screwed on my first one.

Not at 20k miles, it is still just a baby... The 04.5-05 LLY's are know for #2 and #7 injector harness issues where the wire is too tight and has problems down the road, and also with a high drag, high weight trailer in high temps, are know to get a little warm, and sometimes overheat. You can look on the passenger side exhaust manifold for an EGT probe hole that would indicate someone was looking at those for a reason, which may be good or bad... I have found mine to be a decent reliable motor that gets decent fuel milage and is a decent puller when needed.
