i am looking to get my first diesel truck, but i am torn on which one to get. should i get an 2006 with the lbz and the 6 speed allison, or should i save a few thousand dollars and just get a 2005 lly and the 5 speed. getting the lly gives me more money to spend on the aftermarket parts.

i am not only asking for performance reasons but also reliability. does one engine have more problems than the other, and what about the allisons

also are there any other differences i should look at. i know there are a lot of threads about the differences between the two, but they generally only talk about specs. i do plan on doing quite a few upgrades, so does one have more aftermarket support.

any info would be helpful

Some of the LLY were overheaters. Some where not. There is a fix for it. Performance wise the LBZ is becoming/became the king for the simple "turn it up" crowd. LLY is a great motor also. See what truck is the better deal and go get it.

I have an '04 LB7. I would get an '06 if I could.

The Allison on the 06 is a little better than the 05. They fixed some of problem points that the 05 had plus the 6 speed is nice. The 05 Duramax is a great motor w/ the exception of the overheaters that are out there. I'd say go with the one you can get the best deal with, you won't be dissappointed either way.

if you have the funds get the LBZ. but the LLY is a good option as well. it is a good reliable engine that will not let you down. just keep an eye out for injector issues which are covered under a 150k warranty. i would not worry about the truck overheating just take care of it and it will take care of you. show us some pics when you get the truck
