i just removed the stock muffler and put a 3 inch turn down in its place but its still not the sound i was "looking" for. it's actually not very loud. does the soot trap act like another mini-muffler? i'm looking for that turbo whine. i know it is elusive but i'm attempting to find it. i bought a 3 inch flowmaster muffler that i have not installed yet. where would i be able to find this elusive turbo whine? thanks everyone.

no i don't have an intake yet. i've got the stock rectangular airbox that takes the large flat filter. i believe thay GM changed it a few years after my truck to a round style one that kinda looks like a K&N cone style filter but i'm not too sure. i even disconnected the airbox for about 5 seconds when it was running and stepped on the pedal and still got no turbo whine. i still have the soot trap and factory downpipe and crossover pipe. could that be my problem?

what "style" airbox do you have on your truck? i'm thinking that the turbo downpipe is one of the most restrictive parts on the exhaust system. i've heard that they look like they have been crushed before being put in the trucks at the factory. thats just what i heard tho.

Someone had a stock DP on sale on ebay, I wish I saved the pic. It looked freakin awful. GM makes crappy downpipes, the one on my regal was 2 inches in diameter

I was working with my "guest" 1996 6.5. Installed a 99 or 2000 down pipe,un hooked the pipe from the rear of the TO & installed a 1997 round air cleaner box up top. Had some whine, installed a mandrel bent crossover & got more whine. This was all with the turbocharger muffler chamber in place. I say cut or remove the pipe out of the TO to see if it affects the sound. The TO can be plugged and running the engine fast under load should burn out the low speed soot build up. Maybe find a long 6% grade to climb. Needs high temp & exhaust volume to attempt a clean out. It was desinged to collect exhaust particlate at low speed & burn it up on the highway.Yes it does have some muffler effect & would sound Ok with the stock muffler removed & straight piped to the rear.Soot trap will always have some back pressure though.

Stepping on the go pedal while you're sitting still won't do anything as far as the turbo is concerned. The turbo only works when you're under load. Changing the intake side will produce the most noticable gain in turbo whistle. If you have the "turbo silencer", take it off (not sure on your model year). It's the black plastic tube coming off the intake that bends it's way towards the front of the engine. Be sure to plug the hole. An open-style air filter will help, also.
