I went with the straight pipe a month or so ago...dont have any clips for you...but if you have ever ridin in a truck with glasspacks at 60 mph down the highway...thats what it sounds like....a moan that will drive you crazy...am waiting for Santa to bring my Borla exhaust...:)

different strokes. With my exhaust on my lb7 I get very little in cab noise and I like the sound. Get on it and watch out though:eek::ro)

Mine is straight piped and I love it. Actually in the process of bending and fabricating a 5" system that will be straight piped as well. Should be interesting. As of now I have no serious in cab noise that bothers me and I like the overall sound of the truck...

My wife commented that my staight piped Dmax is quieter than my previous 5.7 gasser with straight piped duals. Of corse that's even a step down from my straight piped big block. Had to be real careful in town with that one.

FWIW mine isn't noticeably louder pulling my 5K trailer than empty.

my 05 duramax is strait 4" side exit infront of the rear wheel. The sound is sooooo awsome! You here the turbo at idle and then when you get on it there is nothing to compare it to!Just need to be able to handle wiping down the rim every few days

Man that is what I have been looking for, did you just go to your local muffler shop and have them bend up some 4" from the cat back? Do you have any pictures of your exit on the side? How is the sound in the cab? I want to do the samething!

I think its a great sound, not too overwhelming in the cab while cruising but when you stand on it, its very impressive.

Went and had mine done in OC this moring, 4" straight pipe from the cat to in front of the rear tire with a huge tip. I love the way it sounds quiet at idle and just enough when I am on the gas. $200.
I will post pictures when I take some later.

Stainless steel 4" Gale Banks turbo back muffler deleted  with a 5" tip behind the rear wheel. The rumble is deap and unobtrusive untill you drop the hammer and this dog knows how to hunt. It is a rip snortin' manly sound. :ro) Half the time I have to lower the rear right window so I can enjoy the full effect!!!):h It deffinately turns heads when I lay into it... And at least on one occasion I turned the wrong head:mad: Damn noise ordinances!!!

If you drive with the windows down, you definately hear the spooling, it sounds like a pair of hair clippers with a fan, or some type of saw.. then the moment you give it a little go, then it starts to whistle. At WOT, it sounds like a screaming jet, distorting and ripping up the air.

I am straight piped and I love the sound. Hardly any noise in cab. When I am pulling the 5er, it is a bit more noticable but not too bad. My wife and I talk normally and it is not annoying. I love going through underpasses and walls on the Right side with the windows down. :ro) NICE but can hurt the ears though. :D

I was thinkin of convertin my kit to a "straight pipe exiting just in front of the rear wheel. This would give more under the bed room for additional accessories (oversize spare, propane, NOS, air tank, horn . . . .? Just wonder what the impacts of this relocation would be. Would any dyno owners object to this? smoke the whole side of the truck? It would certainly be a shorter pipe

I used to have my truck straight piped and you could hear me comming thats for sure. i prefer my Bassani kit with its muffler also have heard that aero turbine muffler it sounds good. dont like the exhaust exiting in front of the rear tire makes a mess of wheels but hey not washing your truck for 3 months will too.(OOPS)!

i love the looks of a side exiting tail pipe in front of the wheel. i'm very tempted to fab up a 5" straight pipe side exit, but i'm really concerned about the noise levels in the cab. so, how bad is the soot build up on the rear wheel, really? is it so bad that you have to wash the wheel every couple or days, or like once a week?

it wouldn't be that much for the pipe and elbows, but i'm alittle leary to waste the money on something that is going to be too loud for my tastes. my camaro has wore me out on loud exhasut and i'm liking the quietness of the dmax right now. do you all think i would have any luck selling the system if i didn't like it. i would probably sell it for cost of material.

hey andy, i would still like to see some pics of your system if you have the time.

We just installed a 5" straight pipe exhaust, afe stage2 intake, and juice/attitude (set on level 4). Decided to record a few clips to share. These are all taken inside the cab with the mic placed near the passenger-side rear window (except the first one which was taken outside).

1. Reving the engine, gotta love the turbo whine:)
http://0ryan0.home.mchsi.com/1reving.wav

2. Hard acceleration, had to take it easy initially on all of these because some of the roads were still wet from the .5" snow we got yesterday.
http://0ryan0.home.mchsi.com/2hardaccel.wav

3. Moderate acceleration

4. Light acceleration

5. Moderate acceleration, then switching to tow/haul.

hey ryan athat sounds good but was your window up or down?

jmg343
12-27-2004, 09:20 PM
ryan. do you have a cat or muffler on there or is it just straight all the way. I have a 4"downpipe and right after the 90 I go into 5" and then theres nothing till the end. I exit behind the passenger side rear wheel. It sounds good at 1900 rpms and up but at idle it sounds closer to a fighter jet taxing down the runway. Or a really big blow dryer. Do you know the sound im talking about, whats different about your pipe if anything? I also havent had anyone drive the truck past me or away from me, so the only sounds I know are those I hear from the drivers seat.

RyanG
12-27-2004, 10:27 PM
Sorry, the window was down (passenger/back).

There is no cat or muffler. The front pipe is 4", the rest is 5" (basically 5" from where the flange is on the stock system all the way back).

Not really sure what you mean about idle sound. It sounds deeper and a little louder than stock, I think it sounds good. I can take another sound clip if you'd like of it starting and then idling.

Picture of where the 5" actually starts...

jmg343 -- I didn't realize you had an lly. I have an lb7 so it might sound differant than yours.

Sounds pretty sweet, man I need to do something to mine soon...

jmg343
12-28-2004, 12:29 PM
the lb7 lly difference may have something to do with any differences. how about this, when installing my 5", the kit came with enough 4" to go into 5" at the same spot as you show in your pic, near the flange. However, on the advice of someone, I cut that 4 in" way back, to right after it makes a 90, and then welded the 5" on from there. Does or could eliminating that foot and a half or so of 4in have an effect on the sound?
Either way the more I drive my truck the better I like the sound. So either way im happy i guess

Slick

The difference in sound between the LLY and the LB7 is due to the VVTurbo on the LLY. The 6.0 stroker has the same turbo and they sound like a jet as well. (Esp. the '03s, they sound freaking wicked.) But that's about all they have going for them.):h
On edit: This is of course if the cat is removed and you have a non-restrictive muffler.

RyanG, who made you exhaust system?

RyanG
01-03-2005, 03:39 PM
Ordered it through Diesel Performance Parts. Here is a direct link to the system: http://www.dieselperformanceparts.com/cgi-bin/search.pl/dieselshop?dieselshop_exhaust&category=exhaust&manufacturer=General%20Motors%20Duramax&e_color=aluminized_gm&f_sortorder=abc&f_match=100

I don't think it really has a name...I think they have a shop make them. Mark Craig could probably tell you more about it.

RyanG - how is the sound in the cab cruising down the highway with windows closed between 65 and 75? any annoying drone or resonance?

RyanG
01-04-2005, 05:42 PM
You can hear it a lot more over stock, but it isn't bad. With the stereo on it is barely noticable. There isn't much resonance at cruising speeds, but a little in certain areas of the rpm band when accelerating.

Ryan;

FYI I almost put my RS9000X in-cab controller in the garbage also !! I called them and did not believe their advice but when some new parts arrived I tried one last time. It has worked !!! I am still amazed.

The drone is what I want to know about. Does anyone have that and does it help or hurt trying to get loads moving with less backpressure?

Ryan,

I went to the site where you got your exhaust and it shows a muffler with the system. I thought you were running a straight sytem without a muffler. Did you just ask for pipe in place of the muffler?

I put a KD 4" on my dually so I had my stock 3.5" laying around. I cut the muffler out on my 2500HD and cut a piece out of the old 3.5" and installed it. No drone at any speed. Definately loud towing a heavy trailer. Otherwise it sounds very 454ish (big block).:ro)
