It's a good thing you got extended warranty. It might be worth it extending it as much as you can or at least as long as you are going to own it.

On the bright side, you have a lot of new parts.

I would think that the dealer maybe wasn't very good. It doesn't make sense that the radio reciever needed changing 4 times.

ques what, overnights she sleeps in the heated garage, but during the day it was cold (first day this year). I was stranded with a no start at my office last night. I bled the fuel filter and still no start. I have to charge the batteries and put a volt meter on them today. I will also try (first time for me) to change the fuel filter in the parking lot today (High of -18 today). Any other suggestions. I actually HOPE it is Injectors as then I can get it out of the way.

I'm looking into that. when I crack the bleeder and pump the primer it squirts out fuel. However, I took the small drain plug out of the bottom of the filter and nothing came out. Both the bleeder and the drain plug were removed....

Interesting... I get a phone call from the dealer and he indicates to me that I need new glow plugs, a filter change and my battery bolt fixed. All for the low price of $500. Fine, it's under warranty right. NO, he says that glow plugs are not under warranty. I was so mad I went down there an threatened to have it towed to another dealership and never return. When I asked for my Truck they take me to a 1998 GMC.... What the...

Ooops, sorry sir. You glow plugs are probably fine.

and I wait some more.

Van AAken majically vanished. The verdict is very low batteries in the cold. It starts inside the dealership. Makes sense as that was the very first time the truck saw any type of cold since I got it. Also the first thing my buddy back home (a GM tech) said when I showed him my truck was "it cranks kinda slow".

Any suggestions on new batteries?

Because the voltage was low and he started with the remote starter their is a chance that the bypass module failed to do its thing. Low batteries with high draw intake heater, glow plugs and starter could bring voltages down too low for electronics to operate properly.

I personally installed his remote start with a data bypass. In the event of a bypass failure he still should have been able to start the truck with the key after the fact. Something is fishy, that's for sure.

As mentioned, the initail start was second hand information, so I'm not completely sure about that. I suppose it could have been turning over with the lights on?

What happened later when you tried to start it with the key? Just crank and no start? Was it towed in? At what point did it start again?

When I finally came out it wasn't running so I hit the auto start again. It turned over for quite awhile before I got there. As soon as I got to the truck I turned the autostart "off" then tried with the key. It just turned over and over, by that time it seemed to labour just a little untill it got noticably slow. I left it there all night then came back the next day with a battery charger, that's when I realized the block heater plug-ins weren't working anyway, I couldn't even charge it. GM towed it under warranty to the dealership. That's where it eventually started. I'm not sure if they boosted it to get it going or not? when I picked it up it was outside and started fine. I'll keep her warm untill I put a couple new batteries in.

OH, no security lights.

It's not over, I moved my truck outside last night to use the garage for other things. I decided to leave it there and not plug it in as a test of the original problem.

This morning = Lots of cranking power and not start. I hooked up my original 2 batteries with the new 2, and a 100A charger/starter. It cranked like crazy but still no start. It is clearly a cold issue so I pluged it in and will hopefully drive it to the dealer AGAIN. Does anyone think Glowplugs?

I know it should be plugged in, but I would like my truck to start if I go hunting or fishing for the day.

I assume you tried to start without the remote start this morning?

I am pretty certain that is not the problem but you need to eliminate as many variable as possible.

I did the same thing, I tried starting it from my house with the remote. When that didn't work I got all my batteries and charger, turned the Astro start off, then used the key. I just tried again (with the key) after one hour of block heater. I guess I'll try another hour.

it got down to -24 last night and it is -18 now. The first time it sat all day at -20. fuel could be gelled I guess as I don't run additive.

I talked to the service guy about the first time this happened and he said my truck started after 1 hour inside the shop, and after the batteries took a charge.

Would it only take an hour for fuel to un-gel? if so that could be it. Would plugging it in make a difference if it was gelling?

Tow truck is on its way so I'll find out soon... or not.

Yeah fuel could ungel after 1 hour inside. Plugging it in would make no difference if the fuel gelled.

Do you buy your fuel from a high volume dealer? Are you putting #2 in it by any chance? Diesel should be full blend winter fuel now but if you are filling out of a bulk tank or a low volume dealer there is a chance you could still be running summer #2 fuel. However I find that highly unlikely.

Have you ever drained the water seperator? Do you ever get water?

Either way I suggest you buy a good fuel additive and start using it with every fill up. You can do a search here and you will find that primerose and FPPF are the favorites. I run John Deere fuel conditioner as it is supposed to be good and is easy to get. I've never found anyone in Manitoba that sells FPPF or primerose.

Yup that was my ford. SGI and I are still discussing the settlement. I forgot that after the first episode with the no start, I put fuel treatment in. Although something I picked up at canadian tire,

I pulled the little plug out of the fuel filter and took off the bleeder screw the first time this happended and NOTHING came out. That's why I suspected Gelling originally but then it was diagnosed as Batteries.

I see from my service record that some pressure cycling switch was replaced twice within 10,000km.

Is this related to fuel pressure? Could it be related again?

You have to crack the bleader screw when you open the water drain to get it to come out. Water or not fuel will come out of there.

If fuel pressure is low it can cause a no start as is evident with bad injectors.

Did you stick your code reader on there and see if their are any codes?

I did mention that I eventually removed the little bleeder screw completely... nothing.

I didn't remove everything from the bottom of the filter but that smaller drain plug (about 1.5 inches long and .5 inches in diameter). I primed it lots but don't know what a full filter is suppose to feel like for primer pressure. With the bleeder open (and drain plug in) it shoots diesel out when primed.

and no, I didn't have the code reader on hand when this happened the first time. Today I didn't do anything but give it back to the dealership and let them try to figure it out.

sure hope I'm approaching the end of all the problems.

Fuel or water should have came out no matter what. Perhaps that is your problem. If it is, they will most likely charge you and it won't be covered under warranty. Including the tow. :(

Everyone's first guess was right on. Gelled fuel. I bought from somewhere with new tanks as of November. I assumed that since they were completely filling new tanks in November it would be winter fuel, but no. It was tested and I'm running summer fuel.

$163 lesson for me.

For my own sanity I will update this thread. I'm now waiting for a complete set of injectors. I went away for a week and left the truck at the dealership. I told them to start it every morning without plugging it in. It never started, even at temperatures as warm as 8 deg F.

I'm now waiting for injectors. I hope this also fixes my 11mpg issue.
