If you are at all mechanically inclined, you can do it yourself. There are several write ups in the DIY section. After having tranny failure in a previous truck, I am pretty anal on making sure that the fluid is clean.

I have always changed the fluids in the truck but does it need flushed like the dealer says?

IIRC, they say to not use the flush machines on the Allison, does not do any good. You can do your own flush, again there are several write ups in the DIY section, and save yourself some money.

X2, Do a search for the "Hoots" method if you want to flush it. With this method you are disconnecting the transmission cooler return line at the trans. clamping a 5/8" dia. hose and draining into a 5 gallon bucket as you refill the transmission. I did it that way because I was switching to Transynd synthetic atf. If you are not switching to synthetic just drain, change spin on(which you can purchase from any Allison dealer for about $10) and refill with new fluid. GM dealers want between $35 and $45 for the same thing. You can find an Allison dealer on their website in the upper right corner under "Locator". Good luck.:D

The cooler flow rate on the Allison is much higher than the flush machine was designed to provide. Just follow the write-ups. Basically its just draining the pan and refilling with fresh fluid, disconnecting the line returning from the cooler at the trans and allowing it to purge into a bucket for about 30 sec. Reconnect the line, refill the tranny and you're done. Search for the "Hoot" method for specifics.

One word of caution, do not overfill. It will cause the Ally to run hot. The bottom of the hot band AFTER reaching normal operating temp is good.

For $200 they are likely only dropping the plug and draining the pan and changing the filter. Dexron 6 is better then $5/qt and Transynd and Amsoil Torque drive are more like $7qt. So 16 quarts is $90 already. If you tow a decent amount then I would flush the whole thing like I did. Towing gets that trans heated pretty good. Do some reading and the hoots method, change to a better fluid and run it longer and work on it less.

I did the "Hoot" method when switching over to TranSynd fluid and just in the fluid and filters I had $200 into it. It's fairly straightforward to do, and it definitely helps to have an extra set of hands around.

It also depends on the type of machine that is being used. We spent $1000.00 to get our Xtend machine upated.
