I notice that if I soft shoe my truck for a few days then get on it hard it smokes a lot then returns to normal after a few times. Is this normal.

Yes...Soot buildup inside, Then when you get on it. It blows it out..

As stated above it's totally normal. If it's stock and does it all the time there's a problem or you got yourself some High Sulphur diesel.

Mine does it too. I let my girlfriend drive it one day, and then i got in it the next and it smoked quite a bit until i got it out in about one nice blast. lol

it makes for a good cloud after a road trip cruising down the highway! soot just builds up in the pipe, then all blows out at once.
