I am in the desert, on arriving my low coolant light was on. I have not added any coolant ever in 30k miles. is it normal to add coolant every once in a while, and is it ok to add water to the resavoir. I still can see some in there. thank you

sounds like you have a leak , I would bring it to someone you trust for a pressure check. I have never add a drop of dex cool to any of my 3 trucks , I keep them for 2~3 years and 80K~90,000 miles.

It won't be a problem to add some water... Like the others said, keep an eye on it. Is it coming from the drain tube off of the reservoir? Also, when the engine is up to temp check your upper coolant hose to make sure there isn't too much pressure.
