Not sure how many will experience the same thing I did on my IHI turbo, but recently, I swapped out exhaust housings. I found several (more like 14-16) cracks in various places. I had another guy tell me that his was all cracked up also, and one other saw cracks under the wastegate flap.

Thinking the nitrious and monster fueling are just making too much heat. I plan to have it cleaned up so that I can shoot some pics...

Never kept one in long enough.... but i suppose if i looked at them i would see cracks.

So you're saying 1800 degree runs are hard on them in the long run):h Did it look like they would eventually lead to the housing coming apart?

There are about 8 cracks in the partition in the scroll, and maybe 4 in the radius exiting the housing. 3 under the wastegate, and 1 forward of the exhaust wheel.

I've swapped the cartridge assy several times, and never noticed any cracks. This time it was obvious. I think in time it would have crumbled. 2000° is more the norm Heck, I've had my LLY across 1800° already...

Damn, I better start saving up for the turbo fund.

the cause of those CRACKs IS ADDICTIVE..........):h

You are bidding on this beautiful custom cue from AE Cues in Denver Colorado. This cue is from my personal collection and has extremely limited play time. It is made out of cameteo, a very rare, dense Rosewood that is very difficult to acquire. It has a wonderful, rich burgundy color with irregular black streaks throughout creating a beautiful grain pattern that is very unique.

bling bling.......lly performance on the way:ro)

Turbos sure do get the crap beat out of them. It's a wonder they do as well as they do.

Clean em up and put some dye-penetrant on em. Then take pics.

Beautiful Cue!

I've been known to shoot against those cues every so often in the local watering hole. Boy, were they Censored when I beat them and took their money.

I'm not sure if they were upset about losing the game, losing their money, or the fact that I beat them using a "broomstick" from behind the bar. ):h

Confusious say:

Clean em up and put some dye-penetrant on em. Then take pics.

I'll send it thru the blaster at the local engine shop to clean it up, then WD-40 it and keep it as a display.

Will cracks in the turbo warp the exhaust valves?

Cracks in the turbo can do a number of things. They can bleed off drive pressure/leak, or create turbulence, but primary concern is if they shift or twist there could be contact, or pieces could break off...

As anyone designed a aftermarket turbo kit yet? I know Quad had one in developement but I have not heard anything recently.

As long as the carnage is kept on the exhaust side all of the pieces should go away from the engine. My collegue had an IHI turbo on his Chevy Sprint - similar problem. Casting washed out around the wastegate outlet and cracked up around the exhuast housing. This is not good news - hopefully it is a function of the multiple moon shots JK has done with his truck and not a design flaw. The sprint issue was apparently a common problem. :(

ATS sells some after market turbos. Dont recal the name but I do remember that Clint had one on the truck he raced at Bandemere last July. I am sure sp33d or SD can tell you more. . . .

Time for an Inconel housing eh? Maybe consider chrome plating the inside to reject heat?

Chrome will flake. Ceramic would be best. The bond is much stronger.

The cracking is usually thermal change related. My guess is when JK shows the pics the cracking will all be where the housing does abrubt thickness changes. Another thing that would help is to actuall insulate the housing better. At least the cool down cycle would be softened.
