: Do I Sell It Or Keep It
ag4gt 12-03-2004, 01:15 PM I have had something rolling around in my mind for several months and in the last week or so it has come to the forefront.
When we bought my wife’s Duramax in May of ’03 (’01, certified used vehicle), we bought an extended warranty at extra cost (boy I am glad I got it).
We have had several problems with the truck.
bad drive shaft center support bearing
blowing coolant out of bottle (miss diagnosed as bad thermostats)<O:p</O:p
bad temperature gage (still not right)<O:p</O:p
bad dome light switch in instrument panel
bad outside mirror switch<O:p</O:p
blowing coolant out of bottle (again, in the shop right now) looking at injector sleeve seals this time
<O:p</O:p
The truck only has 65k miles on it right now but I am thinking about getting rid of it when the warranty runs out. I am not actually calling it a lemon, but I am wondering about the long term upkeep of the vehicle.
Your comments would be appreciated.<O:p</O:p
Goldsburg 12-03-2004, 01:28 PM It sounds to me like you are just now getting the bugs worked out;) .
I am leery of trading vehicles because it always seems like such a losing proposition. The stealers never bat an eye as they are ramming the red hot poker in:mad: .
If you are selling, I do not think that you would have any problem getting what you need out of it. The biggest selling point to me on those 01 and 02 DMAX's is the 200K mile injector warranty. I'll take a minor repair (such as those you mentioned) over the thought of paying for injector replacement  any day!
If you do end up selling, is it a 4WD, Crew Cab, Extended Cab, etc...? Inquiring Minds Want to Know!!!!:D
Got Juice? 12-03-2004, 01:36 PM Tough call.
I am not in your shoes so....... and my DMX has been trouble free, probably because i baby it so much (OMG!)
I am not looking forward to the day when i want to buy another truck. I'll Probably go CTD next time... only because IMHO the LLY is a little bit of an unknown quantity yet.
But for now, I would get your truck repaired and see what the next 10K miles brings.
I intend to keep my 02 until the wheels fall off. (or until i run out of turbos to buy off ebay)
towin43 12-03-2004, 02:00 PM Keep it. Those problems are minor.
Diesel Power 12-03-2004, 02:33 PM i would keep it too.
aketay 12-03-2004, 02:52 PM DP, I just hit the contest banner and it said I do not have the privledge/access to enter.
BassinRVer 12-03-2004, 03:27 PM me too.
dmaxalliTech 12-03-2004, 03:53 PM keep it, you replace it and your problems will start all over...

Sounds like once you get the headgaskets replaced you might as well keep it.
Victory Red 12-03-2004, 05:48 PM This is always a tough call. Every vehicle I've owned new or used at some point caused me some issues, be it a manufacture defect, or how the heck did XX part go bad already!!!!
We all favor our brand in one way, shape or form but with vehicles it mainly seems to be drawing straws whether or not you get a good one. So far I think I've got a good one with 1 set of injectors at 24,000 miles(currently 34,700) and some torn wire insulation early on causing all types of weird things. My wife's 03 Trailblazer with just over 40k has had one bad A/C relay and replacement tailight circuit boards.
Not perfect, but I'm happy. Keep what you've got and get the small stuff fixed. When something major goes bad, re-evaluate value, new pricing and current feelings toward vehicle in general.
gardnerteam 12-03-2004, 07:23 PM KEEP IT!!! Wish I had kept my 02 instead of getting the 05. 02 D/A was the best truck I've ever owned and I've owned a few (see below). I'd dump the 05 right now except I have to get outta here for 3 or 4 months for my tours in Central America. If it so much as sneezes during the 25,000 mile trip, I will dump it and buy either a very low mile 02 or next years Cummins when the cheap truck wrapped around it (can't bring myself to say Dudge yet) gets true 4 doors and hopefully a tranny. At very worst, after 22 years of buying new GM diesels, I might even buy a gas rig and to hell with mileage. The 05 DA is not any better than the gas. I think my 05 GM will be the last of my 22 or 23 new GM trucks.
arguy 12-03-2004, 08:42 PM Keep it!! Minor problems will pass...
Tom Cobb 12-03-2004, 09:19 PM Keep the truck. It is just getting broke in good. All vehicles will have the little things going wrong. Nothing made by man is perfect. You have extended warranty to cover it all. You won't get much on trade and the retail market for them is not as much as you may think. I had to some real hard negotiations to trade my 01 for a used 03 (needed a 3500 long bed). You may come out OK but don't bet on it. It seems like you have a good truck.
