Anyone have the reflash (Sept. 04) info handy? I gave my only copy to the last dealer. And spent way too much time searching for it again.

04 6.6 LLY Smoke, Fuel Knock, Surging, and High Injector Balance Rates

.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom described in the PI.

Condition/Concern:

Customer concern may be a low speed surge (8 to 10 mph or near 1000 RPM), acceleration fuel knock noise at 1500 to 1800 RPM, rough idle, white smoke at idle, or high positive injector balance rates.

Recommendation/Instructions:

High positive injector balance rates (over +4.0 in park or +6.0 in drive) may be causing white smoke at idle or while driving.

Document all injector cylinder balance rates at the beginning of the diagnosis.

There is an updated calibration to address the white smoke, high positive balance rates, idle surge, and a fuel knock noise at or near 1500 to 1800 RPM.

Install the updated calibration and evaluate the smoking, high injector balance rates, idle surge, and fuel knock noises.

If there is still a mechanical concern with an injector, and balance rates are still over the SI specification of +4.0 in park or +6.0 in drive, replace only the effected injector.

NOTE: Before any injector replacements a large fuel sample should be taken from the fuel filter and checked for contaminants or poor quality.

Redneck 45-
Below is the information I submitted to my dealer to get the reflash done. My PCM already had the 15141668 Operating System. The service cal fixes eliminated the rough idle, but fuel mileage has continued to deteriorate. Another trip was made to the dealer with a specific request for a full Tech 2 diagnostic check to specifically include checking the injector balance rates at idle and above. The injectors malfunctioned once and a conference call with GM determined that if they malfunction once they'll do it again. I've currently been waiting for about two weeks for a new set of injectors. Hope the new ones get me back to the 18-20 mpg range I was getting right out of the box.
Good Luck-

1. DRIVEABILITY ISSUE.

ENGINE PERFORMED FLAWLESSLY UNTIL IT HAD APPROXIMATELY 4250 MILES (800 MILES AGO).

ENGINE NOW HAS A ROUGH IDLE WHEN AT A STOP (IN GEAR WITH FOOT ON BRAKE) AND THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE IS BETWEEN 180 AND 195 DEGREES. ALSO SURGES WHEN TRAVELING LESS THAN 5 MPH (PARKING LOTS) AT THE SAME ENGINE TEMPERATURES.

THIS HAS ADVERSELY AFFECTED FUEL ECONOMY.

THIS WAS INITIALLY JUST A NUISANCE ITEM SINCE OUTSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE ALLOWED THE ENGINE TO WARMUP BEYOND THIS RANGE QUICKLY. LOWER TEMPERATURES NOW KEEP THE ENGINE IN THIS RANGE ALMOST ALL OF THE TIME IN CITY DRIVING.

NOTE: Here is information downloaded from The Diesel Place Website:

THIS ISSUE IS AFFECTING A LARGE NUMBER OF LLY ENGINES.
CHEVROLET ISSUED NEW SOFTWARE ON 10 SEP 2004 TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM BY REFLASHING THE PCM. CODES ARE AS FOLLOWS:
15141668 = Operating system
15245557 = Service cal fixes
15245549 = Service cal fixes

Dealer did this re-flash on my 04 LLY and it lost 10 mph climbing the cajon pass towing my 5er. I'm very dissapointed with this re-flash.

Yea, maybe the dealer not doing the reflash for me is a good thing. My truck runs perfect without juice (very seldom get a very light knock at around 1800 rpms--same rpms as when knock is real bad with juice--leading me to believe it is the juice amplifying an existing problem. Then with juice (attitude or not) some days it will knock like crazy others it will not, some days it will even stumble real bad until it gets warmed up, then run good when warm, but still have the knock. So, trying to get the dealer to do anything is tough (cause I take it to him without the juice and it runs great). Last trip dealer said EGR is malfunctioning, so after they replace it I will try juice again--then maybe reflash. Then there is the limp mode with happened once with the juice. Also, I have conducted all these tests and got all the symptoms with the same tank of fuel with additive--ruling that out. I am real close to selling the juice and keeping her bone stock--hell, the $500 or so I can get out of the juice will go a long way put into my 455 '68 pontiac project--that thing I can atleast work on!

I too am considering selling my Edge. I just removed it last night and am going to see how it runs without as far as performance and mileage.

How do you find out what version of the software you have on your truck??

Kendall, if your truck was built before Sept of this year it prob. needs the reflash.

9W3-HD, thanks of the heads up. So I went to the dealer and asked for the reflash, and luckily the kid put words in my mouth, or I should say, service order. He said it smokes “doesn’t it” wink, wink, also it “runs rough”. So i say you betcha it does all those things - so he then reflashed it today. I gotta say I sure notice a difference. One example it used to hover around 13-14 mpg, now it won’t drop below 17.5 mpg - more if I’m easy on it.

One thing when it was on average mpg, after a reset it would lose 5-6 mpg after leaving a stop light, now it only drops 1-2 mpg but then recovers those quickly.

Mine was running fine and I didn’t think it could happen, but it seems to run better. Better mpg for sure.
