: auto head lights ?
gmccall 12-02-2004, 10:33 AM I have a 2002 HD 2500 LT EC
This morning I was coming to work (early) and noticed a police car on the opposite side of the highway w/ most likely radar. Having auto lights which I can't just reach down and turn off and on to warn oncoming, I decided to turn my fog lights off and on. Guess what happens when you push the fog light button twice quickly. Your automatic headlights turn off (if your headlight switch is off anyway). Talking about a suprise. It was dark.
Is this function in the book ? I have had this truck for over 2 years. :o
sprintmod1 12-02-2004, 01:50 PM Are you sure you pushed the fog light switch and not the "dome light switch"; there is a sequence if you push the dome light twice quickly it will kill the lights but it is only supposed to kill the DRL's.?
haneym 12-02-2004, 02:48 PM if you turn the switch to headlights on then back to auto it will turn the auto feature off (resets when you remove key from ignition or when you turn em off and on again). same with daytime running lights - move the switch counterclockwise and it turns em off. again to turn em back on.
_nar_ 12-02-2004, 10:21 PM haneym-He had a 2002 they didn't have the switch that went to off. On those you had to hit the dome override 4 times.
wsucowboy 12-02-2004, 10:36 PM yep, dome override 4 times, it has turned into a ritual for me, whenever I get in the truck I just hit it 4 times and then go. I HATE THE AUTO HEADLIGHTS!!!
moss022 12-02-2004, 10:39 PM its 3 time for my truck. anyways you do that and it turns the auto feature off. which means, during the day it will kill the drl. then at night it will kill the head lights.
haneym 12-03-2004, 08:22 AM my bad. shoulda read the post better!
_nar_ 12-03-2004, 07:29 PM It does actually do it at 3 but I always went 4 because I wanted it to be back on the same setting it was on before. I'm pretty happy this new truck has the switch that does it instead though, it's just a little easier and nicer. At least it means GM actually allowed us to decide....
Well unless you live in canada in which case the government said you can't decide on your own. That would really irritate me..
Mickael 02-27-2005, 08:27 PM That wont work with my Canadian made '01 DMax and they will not give up the code to my dealer:mad:
_nar_ 02-27-2005, 10:04 PM If you have a candian truck that is now in the US you should be able to get it flashed with the US programming that would allow that to work. I have a friend that has an 01 originally from canada that has never been flashed and his light override doesn't work either.
Texasdeere 04-17-2005, 06:29 PM Is it possible to retrofit the older Dmax light switch for the new style? (the lightswitch that stays in the off position) Like a 2002 light switch into a 2005 truck...
_nar_ 04-17-2005, 11:10 PM I don't think the newer wiring system would let that work. Why would you want to? On the newer truck it is easier to turn the lights off anyway.
aka108 04-18-2005, 09:34 AM Sort of wish all vehicles were equipped with auto headlights. Too many drivers do not turn on the manual lights until it's pitch black. It's not that they can't see at dusk, it's that they are not seen by others. Automatic lights can be a PIA at times but the benefits outweigh the shortcommings.
Texasdeere 04-18-2005, 12:32 PM I agree with you on the safety issue aka108. There are just a few things my truck does that I do not care for:
Daytime running lights (don't think it helps much on safety, but they must since they are becoming more popular)
Automatic door locks ( I usually never lock my doors ever, unless I go into town )
Automatic headlights ( I will turn them on or off when conditions warrant)
I guess I am a little old fashion about some things
84jeepjohn 04-18-2005, 09:48 PM granted I'm still waitin on the ol' lady to let me get a D-max :) but in her 2000 Grand Cherokee it's got the auto head lights, and I honestly do not remember the last time I turned them on. They come on when needed and go off when not needed. If I'm doing something that I shouldn't and I have to have them off I can turn them off ( or just drive my POS ( they don't always work :)) I think the auto ones are a nice convienence (sp)
Carson Smith 04-19-2005, 12:52 PM Leave it to California, we have a new law, which I understand a number of other states have that requires the headlights to be on if you use your windshield wipers. Once you are used to the auto headlights it is easy to forget to turn them on manually when you need your wipers.

would you still need to turn on the full headlights with the wipers even with the daytime runing lights which should be on anyway (unless you turned them off)?
Carson Smith 04-19-2005, 05:51 PM You would think that the daytime running lights(assuming that they still work) would be OK unless you found a really chicken **** cop that said they weren't "headlights".
AkDually61 04-20-2005, 08:03 AM Somewhere in this forum, ( I am still searching :help2: ) someone told or explained how to permenatly disable the auto headlights with a diode up by the sensor. if anyone knows how or where this is can you pm me ?
I kinda like the idea of being smart enough to know when headlights should be used. instead of someone else running the show.
thanks
