: LLY Smokeing at idle after warmed up
turbotp 10-18-2007, 08:03 PM Hi, i have been digging around the site looking for info but cant find anyone with this problem with the LLY engine. Lots for the LB7 tho.
My 2004.5 dmax is smoking when idling after warmed up. grey puffs and a bit rough idle. i have taken it to the dealer and they keep saying they cant find a problem and just change the fuel filter and charge me 150 bucks. thing is its getting worse, and a bit embarrassing. i have 5" straight piped turbo back, K&N intake, and an edge chip. i have undid the chip and get the same issue. i find that when at idle, if i rev it up to about 1000 problem goes away. do these LLY have the same balancing issues as the LB7 issue i have been reading about? i have also tried using conditioner with no change.
Thanks for any help

turbotp 10-18-2007, 08:05 PM I should also add it still goes like a raped pig:P no performance loss
kodydog 10-18-2007, 08:21 PM Possibles:
Bad Injector(s)
Dirty Injectors - Have you tried a fuel conditioner like Power Service that will clean the injectors?
Balance Rates - get hold of scanner to check for balance rates?
Could be injector wiring harness problems?
Bad Fuel Filter
sfcjones 10-18-2007, 08:34 PM Dealer kinda charge abit more than most for the fuel filter change, however what I would do is get the injectors cleaned. A good diesel service can do this, if something is startingot happen this can be worth the hundred buck they charge....takes about a hour to do and they hook up a machine that cleans the injectors directly, the intent is to restore the injector nozzle and tip back to proper tolerance and not misbehaving...
DangerousDuramax 10-18-2007, 08:37 PM One other thing to check is your PCV system. If it becomes restricted you will start puffing white and gray smoke.
PoPsRacing 10-18-2007, 09:34 PM Could the MAF have K&N filter oil on it?
MT Dmax Squid 10-18-2007, 09:47 PM Yup, if you have not cleaned the MAF sensor, I would recommend trying it just to eliminate the possibility.
HD4x4 10-18-2007, 10:04 PM I hope you are useing an ADDITIVE in your Fuel
turbotp 10-18-2007, 10:22 PM Wow thanks for the fast help. ill check the MAF and PCV valve right away and see where that takes me.
superboy95 10-18-2007, 10:53 PM Get rid of the K&N. Should be a sticky at the top of every page, IMO.
Fingers 10-19-2007, 02:44 AM Bent rods maybe?
turbotp 10-19-2007, 03:10 PM The cold air intake on the truck is a airaid. and has been cleaned like a k&n would be. can i get an air filter from afe that will fit the airaid kit? is there a bore difference?
PoPsRacing 10-19-2007, 08:41 PM Bent rods maybe?
WOW Fingers, I'll bet you got his butt puckered up so tight you could'nt drive a pin up it with a jack hammer right now.
Fingers 10-19-2007, 08:54 PM I assume you mean his not mine. :D
Cole11 11-09-2007, 06:37 PM Any updates on this issue. My truck started doing the exact same thing today. Never had any issues before.
ssduramax 11-10-2007, 09:12 AM IIRC there was an computer update that supposedly fixed this (white smoke at idle and rough idle). Mine was doing it about a year and a half ago but quit on its own.
Now it seems to be doing it again a little bit but I think it may have something to do with the cold weather in the mornings.
Cole, what part of T-town you in?

I am taking mine to the dealer Monday, believe its bad injectors.
Right across the bridge goin toward Northport
golddigger 11-11-2007, 09:03 AM They replaced my egr valve and reflashed my pcm saying they were the cause. Still does it. After reading another post I'm going to check my fuel pressure regulator.
Chevy350 11-11-2007, 08:00 PM The fuel pressure reg might be it. I've heard of that problem before.
My truck did this with the edge. When it was idling, sometimes it didnt matter whether it was warm or cold, but it would surge a bit and have rough idle on and off and puff smoke. Sometimes blue sometimes whiteish. It quit doing it on its own before I had a chance to look into it more and I havent had a problem since. And quit a few less problems since I got rid of the edge.
golddigger 11-11-2007, 10:26 PM I did take my edge off a month ago thinking it might be the culprit. but it still does it.
Cole11 11-12-2007, 07:42 PM Dealership said the #1 Injector was bad.
golddigger 11-14-2007, 12:02 PM :nutkick:Well after one dealer repalceing my egr and reflashing my computer, and Not fixing it I took it to another dealer. ANSWER..... 2 bad injectors, and the Injector pump needs replaced as well. I love it when I am right. I told the first dealer to check out my fuel system and they said they only run like that if the emmissions system is fouled.
4toyhln 11-15-2007, 05:47 AM I've had the same issues with mine for the smoking. It was possible for me to smoke out a small village sitting at a stop light as it got worse.
4toyhln 11-15-2007, 09:38 PM Sorry I forgot to add that the stealer found and replaced one injector after taking it to them 3 times
Velocity Mark 11-17-2007, 04:30 PM I am dealing with the exact same problem and not looking forward to taking it to the dealer. That means put the cat back on change the airbox back to stock and remove the edge.
Is it me or does it seem that all the people with this problem are running the Edge?

I wasnt running the Edge, I was using PPE, I took it off and left my air intake and 5" exhaust on, and they didn't say anything about it.
Getting my truck back Monday hopefully.

You have an extended warranty or something. Mines doing it as well seams like if I put on a new fuel filter it stops for a day or two.
4toyhln 11-19-2007, 12:29 AM Mine truck was and is still stock. So I wouldn't believe it's caused from running the EDGE.

I don't have the extended warranty, Duramax has 100k mile warranty. Cost me a $100 bucks to get it fixed. got it back this afternoon and seems to be running alot better.
ssduramax 11-21-2007, 08:51 AM Cole,
did you take it to Tuscaloosa Chevrolet? I used to work as the service writer there back in 1997 way before they built the new dealership.
Is Vivian still the service manager?
You said you live right accross the river toward Northport, you mean right there were the Chevy place used to be?
I still have some land down in Eutaw (the old homeplace).
