: How much can it handle?
SSNIGHTMARE 12-01-2004, 04:15 PM I am looking to add some power to my Duramax. How much power can I safely add to my Allison transmission and not have to up grade it or effect the longevity of the transmission. I do not want to do any sort of upgrades to my transmission, but I would like to safely add some horsepower to it. I don't want a race truck, but would like to get all I can from my stock transmission. I have been reading for hours in the different posts and no one seems to agree on a solid number. I see anywhere from 60 hp to 110 hp.
Also what programmer is better on the transmission banks or edge? There seems to a cult like following for the edge here. Why is it so much better? I am running after gages so the edge display is not a factor in my decision.
My friend has two psd's with the torque shift. Both trucks have banks six guns installed and he runs them on level 6 all the time with no tranny mods. Is the torque shift a better tranny or is he basically burning up his clutches and just doesn't know it.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.:D
ratlover 12-01-2004, 05:48 PM LB7 or LLY?
I would say if you have an LB7 a juice set to 90 hp above stock is the max or a 6 gun or a TTS tune or a..... around 100hp over stock or 350ish RWHP but some programs rate thier HP differently. Banks shows 150 hp or something like that IIRC, but a edge rated at 150(i have one) would blow a banks(and your trans) away
You could run just an edge box and not use the attitude if you dont want to pay the $ for all the added attitude features.
SSNIGHTMARE 12-02-2004, 08:04 AM Thanks it seems alot of people say around 90 hp. I was concerned because some people are saying that 60 additional hp will kill the tranny.
SSNIGHTMARE 12-02-2004, 08:56 AM Truck is a 2002 LB7
ratlover 12-02-2004, 09:15 AM unloaded a 90 hp juice is pretty much 100% safe IMO
Or you could go with a banks or a TTS or a VA or a.........tons of choices
My TTS on the lower power levels is beyond smooth and drivable. I duno if a 120 TTS would work for you and be 100% trany safe, might ask steve cole his oppinion if yu are interested in that wrote? I drove a VA and although I prefer the TTS in the upper tunes in the lower VA tunes it seemed to compare to the juice. Havent drove banks or the like. If you want to recal for different tires and raise your speed limiter and such I would look at a TTS, if you want auto power back down if it sense trany slippage(its NOT 100% safe, you have to be slipping it to get it to back down! Dont set the box to kill and tow a load and think it will just back down and you will be safe) and an auto EGT back down juice is what i had and like but banks offers the same. VA offers a trany slip back down but no EGT back down. Juice is more customizable with its settings than banks. The quads and predators and hypertechs all work too and you will get power too
SSNIGHTMARE 12-02-2004, 10:01 AM Thanks alot for the info. I appreciate it.
Do you know if I can hook up my existing autometer pyrometer to the edge or banks unit or do I have to run the pyrometer that comes in the kit? I am assuming they both come with a pyrometer probe to be able to back down the power according to egt temp.
ratlover 12-02-2004, 10:19 AM I ran my dipricol gauge and my juice off the same probe.
You have to buy the attitued with the juice to get it to back down and for banks you have to buy the whole shot too.
SSNIGHTMARE 12-02-2004, 10:36 AM Thanks
SSNIGHTMARE 12-02-2004, 04:32 PM Anybody else with opinions or experience?
Mike L. 12-02-2004, 05:11 PM I have seen 60 hp hurt the Ally, especially the converter. I have also seen stock Duramaxes burn the C3s and fry the converter clutch under load (towing). Then again I have seen guys play with 120 hp and not hurt the Ally much.

SSNIGHTMARE 12-03-2004, 09:20 AM I have read on sun coasts web site that any hp increase over stock will harm the transmisssion.
ratlover 12-03-2004, 10:03 AM Mike brings up a good point. Some guys have nuked an ally on low and even stock power, some are fine running stuff that I cant see holding. Not all allys are built equaly. most guys argree that a 90 hp juice is pretty safe on most trans. Be ready to pay if you want to play though IMO
DART505 12-03-2004, 11:59 AM Usually you can run the 110hp boxes no problem as long as the trans does'nt have high milage 200k +.

Not in my experience.
SSNIGHTMARE 12-03-2004, 02:33 PM Has anyone been running the edge system with a stock transmission and had problems with it? If so what level were you running, and what damage did it do?

And what were they trying to sell you........?? Oh yea, a transmission upgrade. :)
ratlover 12-03-2004, 03:02 PM I ran a 90 hp edge for 25k or so on a stock ally in a 6700# truck with 265 tires beating on it pretty good. Never limped zinged it or saw any sign of slip on the attitude. Defule on all shifts. I then set it to the 125 hp leve 2 weeks before i did the trans upgrade(figured i was upgrading might as well crank it up) and didnt limp or zing it but never made a WOT 4-5 gear exchange but if I got on it in 5th it would slip the converter some. Apon disection i found c3 and c4 clutch pack starting to show wear. Converter was probably beat up too. Fluid was chery red instead of bright red. Duno how much of an effect the higher level had or what it would have looked like if i stayed in 90hp?
supatrucka 12-03-2004, 03:39 PM I run mine on 4 with defuel all shifts on stock trans for about 55,000 miles. Level 5 it limps the tranny from 4th to 5th. dave
SSNIGHTMARE 12-03-2004, 04:44 PM I guess they are just pushing product.
Thanks for the feed back this place is great. It seems like 90 hp as long as I'm not beating it will be ok. Any other feed back will be greatly appreciated.

I limped mine with an Attitude box level 5 "once". I never did it a second time thanks to ATS.:D
burkm 01-03-2005, 12:59 AM I've had my juice and attitude on my 03 2500 for 30,xxx miles now. Heavy towing in level 1 or 0 only. everyday driving in level 3. played with levels 4 and 5 when I got it and slipped the trans in fifth gear. Had to see for myself I guess, couldn't resist the temptation. IMHO it all in how ya drive it. If you abuse your tranny it will fail stock or stacked to a zillion hp.
Got Juice? 01-03-2005, 02:10 AM I guess they are just pushing product.

A well spent weekend indeed.
killerbee 01-03-2005, 06:23 AM If you are interested I have a used 90 HP 4 level LB7 juice I'll part with.

This is a technical post. Take your used parts business to the appropriate place. I do not like peddaling, especially when it is not wanted.-:t

Since so many of his songs are anti government and pro anarchy I think he would make a lousy president but I like his music. Especially the Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction albums.:ro)

Jonathan G 01-11-2005, 08:35 PM I have an 01 duramax with the Edge Juice and Attitude. (Not Hot) Stage five is 125hp
increase. The beauty of it is that it defuels all shifts preventing slippage, were the Hot
juice doesn't defuel. I don't use stage 5 much unless I am in the mood for some tire
burning. Even then the tranny handles it very well. As soon as the edge ,with attitude
included, sences slippage, it will automaticaly back off power.

You are fair game and don't know it.:D "Come into my web" ):h  :D
ratlover 01-12-2005, 09:24 AM Hot juice does defuel. I ran it and even when you turn its defueling off it still defuels a bit witch really pisses you off if you have a built trans. Also if the juice is seeing slippage that means there is slippage there in the first place. I pulled apart my trans that i never limped or zinged and saw some damage to the clutches. This was running a 90hp juice for awhile and then running a 125juice for the 2 weeks prior to me doing the trans. The juice is pretty safe but not totaly and just becasue you arnt feeling damage dosnt mean you arnt doing it. Just trying to edumacate ya. Dont want you nuking your trans becasue you think you are safe, now on the other hand if you know the risks and dont mind tearing **** up then smoke em if ya got em!
