: Banks Monster Exhaust
Elowe65 12-01-2004, 01:08 PM Does anyone have any good photos of their Banks Monster system?
Mainly interested in pics of the muffler inlet/outlet lengths, muffler install, tailpipe install.
Reason I ask is becuase, I just finished installing mine and it seems the muffler/tailpipe part of the system is about 3-6 inches too long as the hangers wont reach the factory rubber mounts.
Everything up to the muffler fits perfect, but after that the hangers on the exhaust are 3-6 inches back. I doubled checked to make sure all the pipes were slide together correctly.
PS its a CC SB. but I dont believe that makes a difference after the muffler.
Thanks in advance.
Bronco 12-01-2004, 02:28 PM No pictures here. I do however remeber needing to trim one piece of the exaust system prior to install. It is a straight section about 1 foot long. Needs trimming based on truck configuration. Sounds like this is what happended to you?
Elowe65 12-01-2004, 02:51 PM I saw that note in the manual but it states this (pipe needing to be cut) is only for ext cab application. The pipe that curves around the crossmember (just before the muffler) lines up correctly as does the hanger at that point. With that in mind, I dont believe the flange pipe needs to be cut as that would throw off everything before the muffler.
I appreciate the comment and will double check the manual. Any other thoughts or photos?
Bronco 12-01-2004, 02:57 PM Well I just crawled under the truck to take a look. Since I have an ext. cab and you hace a CC we probally are comparing apples to oranges?
I did notice what you ment about the mount just behind the crossmember and then the muffler. Right behind my muffler there is another mount. Then the section that curves over the rear axle. The only other thing I can think of is that the mounts/hangers expand when hot. So basically all mounts need to be straight up and down when cold and then they point towards the back when hot. Maybe that is the problem?
Elowe65 12-01-2004, 03:17 PM I hit the mount just after the crossmember perfect. Then there's the mount after the muffler, this one does not make it. The mount on the pipe (it's on the actual tailpipe part that slides into the muffler) does not reach the hanger that is on the truck. The hanger (rubber mount) is about 5 inches forward of the mount (stub on the pipe).
It's like the muffler is either too long (which shouldn't be the case as all the mufflers should be the same but could be verified with your help) or the muffler is not slid in the pipe all the way (which is not the case as I measured the engagement and all pipes are fully engaged). Not sure what to do.
I've bugged the crap out of the guys at banks about it and they state all the pipes are the correct pipes for my truck and to make sure they're all engaged correctly.
Scotty Seelen 12-01-2004, 03:38 PM The straight pipe that needs to be trimmed is for a extended cab short box. I think it needs to be trimmed to 9.75". If you have a extended cab long box, it doesn't need trimming. I THINK a crewcab is a different part number than that of the extended cabs, and has a different part no# altogether. This has to be your problem. I know you said you checked with Banks, but look on your box for the part# and check with Banks AGAIN to make sure they sent you the right kit. Good luck.
GMCSLEHD 12-01-2004, 03:48 PM Elowe65,
Does your intermediate pipe look like this, if not you may have one of the other two it shows in the Banks destructions, causing the length problem.
Josh
Bronco 12-01-2004, 03:52 PM My muffler is about 28" long. That includes the inlet, outlet and body.
Elowe65 12-01-2004, 03:58 PM Thats exactly what it looks like. When I first recieved the system, they sent it to me with wrong intermediate pipe. Spoke with the, and they then sent me a new uncut flange pipe and a new intermediate pipe. That took care off everything up to the muffler.
Installed muffler and notice the rubber hanger in the rear seemed to line up with the back of the muffler. Went to install tail pipe section and the stub would reach the hanger. The tail pipe section has 2 stubs, both are about 5 inches away (rearward) from the hangers (puts the tip almost lined up with the bumper).
I then check all the pipes to ensure engagement and they were all fine. It just seems like the muffler is too long. I would cut but it's opened up on both ends so a clean cut would not mate correctly.
I'm not incompetent, but if I'm doing something wrong, plz, let me know.
Thanks Bronco, i'll measure mine tonight and verify. I know the outlet pipe on the muffler is about double the length of the inlet side.
Elowe65 12-01-2004, 04:04 PM I'll get some photos and post it them tonight to help clearify what I'm talking about.
Bronco 12-01-2004, 04:05 PM Installed muffler and notice the rubber hanger in the rear seemed to line up with the back of the muffler. Went to install tail pipe section and the stub would reach the hanger. The tail pipe section has 2 stubs, both are about 5 inches away (rearward) from the hangers (puts the tip almost lined up with the bumper).
Like I said I have the ext.cab but mine is how you decribe yours. The rubber hanger drops down inline with the back of the muffler. However the hanger on the tailpipe comes way forward to line up with it.
I remeber needing to litterlly shove my entire exaust forwad to get everything to line up. Those rubber hangers do pivot. Could this be your problem?
GMCSLEHD 12-01-2004, 04:08 PM I installed one on my dad's ECLB and IIRC the ass end of the muffler was longer. Maybe you got the wrong muffler. Pics will definately help.
Josh
Elowe65 12-01-2004, 04:10 PM I'll check again tonight, but i tried shoving it all together 2 or 3 times last night. All the front hangers (from the front of the muffler) line up perfect.
Another thing, I never once installed the tube clamp that has the stub built onto it. From what I can tell, this is not needed in my case (CC SB). The pipes have all the stubs welded on them.
GMCSLEHD 12-01-2004, 04:18 PM Just for S&G's, what's the system/model # on the box, it should be 48629.
Josh
Elowe65 12-01-2004, 04:35 PM I will check tonight, bu I believe thats it, 629
Elowe65 12-01-2004, 11:28 PM Well, I check everything and took some photos. They can be viewed at
http://community.webshots.com/user/elowe1968
Verified number and it is a 48629
As for the muffler, I measured it and came up with different numbers.
36" overall including inlet/outlet pipes, 21" case length, 3.5" long inlet, 11.5" long outlet.
Think that might be the problem.
Going to see if I can make something work this weekend. System is on but tailpipe section is rigged up for now.
GMCSLEHD 12-02-2004, 08:40 AM Yep, you definately got the wrong Censored muffler, I would think Banks or whomever you got your exhaust from would get you the correct one ASAP.
Josh
on edit:Here's a couple pics of my muffler.
Bronco 12-02-2004, 09:52 AM Well, from looking at your pictures the outlet on the muffler is way to long. Trim it down to about 3"? Take a meauserment from the hanger on the tailpipe to the hanger on the chasis. You know the rest.
The curve in the tailpipe should be on top of the rear axel for travel/clearance purposes. I also noticed your tip pointing down. Yolu can rotate the tailpipe section or entire exaust to get you tailpipe either snug against the rear fender or pointing down to the ground. Your preference.
Good luck!!!!!!!!
If necessary, I have a CC SB kit still in the box. I can check the PN on the muffler for you, but Banks will know the correct no. PM if you want.
DURAMAX1 12-02-2004, 12:53 PM I see a lot of people installing banks exhaust themselves. Does the kit require welding?
Elowe65 12-02-2004, 12:57 PM No welding required. Pretty easy job. Took about 15 min to pull cat and factory system off (no cutting, helps when truck is lifted). Would normally take about 30-40 minutes tops to install new system with no problems.
Elowe65 12-02-2004, 04:51 PM Update,
Banks is replacing the muffler as they verified that it is the incorrect one.
Thanks to those who helped.
Elowe65 12-03-2004, 11:53 PM Update;
Muffler replaced and the whole deal fits like a charm now. Below is a pic of the problem.
Would like to thank Curtis, Jeff and Peter for all their help.
Heading to the dyno next week to play with the new toys.:)
SteveNorCal 12-04-2004, 02:20 AM Very timely info as I was about to order one of these for my Dmax. Could one of you post or PM me what price you paid with shipping? Thanks!
akdiesel 12-04-2004, 05:54 PM Nice looking. I would use the stainless exhaust band clamps instead of the clamps they provide. You get a much better seal then the other style, they don't deform the pipe, and they are a much better looking set up.
Elowe65 12-04-2004, 09:34 PM Going to pick up the ss band clamps this week. Place up the street had to order them.
Bronco 12-05-2004, 01:01 PM So Elowe,
How do you like the sound?
klvn8r 12-05-2004, 10:40 PM Yes please, how does it sound? I'd hate for my Dmax to sound like one of those rattle-trap Powerstrokes.... What did it cost, and what about those of us with the cat converter? Is it purely 'removable' or am I gonna get caught without it when i go for a state inspection?
Elowe65 12-06-2004, 12:51 PM I went ahead and removed the cat from my truck. As for testing, I still haven't heard a straight answer on weather or not we will have to smog these things so I went ahead and hung it up in the garage just in case.
As for the sound, I'm still somewhat young so I was hoping for a more of a big block on flowmasters style of sound. It's slightly louder than stock with a nice tone when up in the RPMs, but not as loud as I'd perfer. I was thinking about straight piping it. The only thing that concerns me about that is I have heard a truck with a straight pipe pulling a pretty good load and it was a little too loud. Could just add on a slip on muffler for towing but we'll see.
Also considering trying a Borla system if I could talk my friend into putting it on his truck.
SteveNorCal 12-06-2004, 01:32 PM Elow65,
Your question about smog inspections. There is a thread on here somewhere about this subject a while back. YES here in Cali we will be getting smog checks in the future (probably in the rest of the US at some point). I'm not sure exactly when it starts, but I think it may be in 2007???
Would you PM me or post the price you paid and where you bought your system? Thanks!
