: 255/85/16 tires
haneym 12-01-2004, 11:06 AM anybody run them? anybody have pics? my stock wimpys are gonna wear out soon and i am deciding between the 255s and 285s. 255/85s are 33.1" tall and 9.85" wide while the 285/75s are 33.1" tall and 11.3" wide. the 255s have an approved rim width of 6.5 to 8.5 and the 285s have an approved rim width of 7.5 to 9. i have seen the 285s first hand, know people running them, blah blah, and i know people on here are running them so thats why i want feedback about the 255s.
being a gasser ive got the 4.10 gears so the height isnt gonna matter (might even get me a little better mileage by lowering RPMs). not only is a skinnier tire better for offroading in many situations (pretty much all except sand) but i wouldnt have to worry about the wide tire on a skinny rim and the bead while towing or loading down the bed. thanks!
1BADDMAX 12-01-2004, 12:27 PM I run Dunlop Mud Rovers in this size. The tires have definitely got me out of some sticky situations. Check my signature for pictures.
haneym 12-01-2004, 03:09 PM after i posted, i saw your sign on another post and checked out the pics. they look pretty good. do they look odd from the front or back (too skinny)? its a little hard to tell from the pics. have you noticed the truck handling any different with the taller, skinnier tires? overall, how do you like the size and would you get them again?
im prob going with either cooper stt or maxxis buckshot, both mud grips.
Dmax Tim 12-02-2004, 09:10 AM Since you're in sunny FLA u won't have to worry about snow and slushy roads but the narrow tire doesn't get pulled around as bad.
I'm running 265/75-16 buckshots now (my winter studded snow tires)
Maxxis also has a 265/85-16 E rated tire, closer to 34" hi.
I towed and hauled a lot and the 285/75-16 on stock rims, gave me no problems.
1BADDMAX 12-02-2004, 11:14 AM I'm on my 2nd set of these tires and they handle well. Definitely a noisy tire though. I'm getting about 30k a set out of them. I need to get some better pictures up sometime. I don't think they look too skinny.
_MJB_ 12-02-2004, 12:11 PM Maxxis also has a 265/85-16 E rated tire, closer to 34" hi.
Do you have any more info on these? Maxxis does not show any tires in that size on its website.
Thanks
Dmax Tim 12-02-2004, 12:33 PM My small rural tire shop has them in stock.
The owner said they were a new tire.
I thought they were too big w/ our heavy mud build-up might cause body damage.
haneym 12-02-2004, 02:56 PM dmax tim - how do you like the buckshots? our local offroad shop sells em and he says hes heard a lot of positives. talked to 2 guys who run em on z71s and they love em also.
i like the looks of this one: http://www.maxxis.com/intellicms/_exec/ecommerce_thumbnail.aspx?maxmode=true&noresizeiffit=false&dozoom=false&width=300&height=300&url=/temp/intellicms.modules.ecommerce/product_images//MT-762_bighorn_radia_0.jpg
its called the bighorn radial and comes in a 255/85. didnt see anything about 265/85s on their site either.
Dmax Tim 12-03-2004, 05:55 AM They work good in mud and snow, the studs help on snow and ice.
I can get around in 2wd where my F-I-L w/ same truck needs 4wd w/ stock tires.
If u want u can change the color of the truck to brown real easy.
I get them for $105/ea w/ studs & mounted/balanced.
The tread on the tires u show look good, similar to MTR.
I've got a set of 40% 255/85-16 BFG MT setting at house, picked them up for $50,mainly to use for a spare for my 285s.
haneym 12-03-2004, 08:20 AM damn thats a nice price! when i asked the 4x4 shop about em when i was picking up my nerf bars, he said they were a little cheaper than BFGs, i think he said around $130 a piece but that prob doesnt include mounting and balancing. checking their website, there are no tire dealers within 300 miles of me. im taking a trip to greenville, sc in 2 weeks and there are dealers up there. if they are that cheap, i may have to get new tires a little early! merry christmas to me ):h .
thats also a nice pickup on the set of BFGs for $50. wish i could find a deal like that!
DuckhunterInTN 12-03-2004, 09:29 AM haneym,
Around my neck of the woods you can get buckshots for at least $50 a tire cheaper than comparable BFG's, so that price is a little high. I would definately go with the BFG's if the price is close. The buckshots are ok, but the definately don't have the ride or life of the BFGs...
DART505 12-03-2004, 11:50 AM I sell the Remington which is owned by dunlop & I sell the Mud Brutes for $108 + tax & balancing. They last & drive much better than the Maxxis.:D
haneym 12-06-2004, 08:40 AM called a couple shops around greenville, sc (where i will be in 2 weekends) and the cheapest price for buckshots was $507 out the door. local shop is $577 total so there is a bit of a difference. BFGs are a lot more down here. 285s run about $165 + tax and m/b which puts you around $750 for the set. theyre nice, but no thanks. other tire i am considering is the cooper. i know people who run em and are happy, im just not sure how they are priced.
after i locked in my playoff spot this weekend in fantasy football, i am guaranteed at least $225 and ive already won $120 in the weekly office pool this year. hopefully those totals will go up before the end of the season too! im gonna wait on this money and put towards the tires.
thanks for the replies and keep em coming if you have any more input
haneym 12-06-2004, 08:42 AM oh and dart505 - are you in my area? your post (or profile) doesnt have much info
