Hey everyone! New to the site and thought it would be cool to get some feedback and ideas of what to expect with my new-to-me truck. This is my first diesel, and I am very fired up about it!

I just upgraded from a '85 5.0L K10 regular cab to a '98 Chevy K3500 Cheyenne Crew Cab with a full size bed. Has 80,000 miles on it and its in really nice shape. Bought it off of a guy who picks up vehicles at government auctions, cleans them up and has any necessary repairs done, then sells them.

Its got a brand new injection pump installed, new paint job, newer tires, spray in liner, etc. Really in nice shape. Not a speck of rust underneath or anywhere else.

Runs super smooth and powerful. Very excited about the truck!

Very nice. Try not to dog it out. Its fun to run them hard but they are expensive when you break them. Nice truck!

Sweet looking ride. Enjoy and the best part of the whole deal is you have access to a great website with all kinds of info. Good luck.

Thanks everyone! Here's a picture of the bed with some sort of railings attached to it. Anyone have any idea what they're for? My original guess was for tiedowns. The openings seem a little shallow for the hooks, but I think they'd fit. I haven't tried yet.

The guy who sold it to me mentioned there were several flags in the back. Maybe it was some sort of survey vehicle? Maybe they had spray equipment or something back there. Would make sense to me that a large liquid tank could have cogs on its base or something that would fit inside the openings on the railings to help keep it steady.

Looks like the runners for mounting a fifth wheel type setup back there for pulling goose neck trailers. Just a guess from what I've seen looking in the bed of trucks setup for towing those trailers.

Also, it looks like a cop ride. Maybe its the black wheels. Now you just need some flashing lights.

I have a similiar truck, except it is 2WD. Same color and all. Mine still has the NSN data plate on the fan shroud as well, showing it was a military truck. Being a military person, my guess is yours was a Air Force truck and if I saw correctly from the interior photo, was there paint on the vinyl seat? This would mean it probably was used for airstrip maintanence(i.e.-painting lines- which might explain the new paint job because of airstrip line overspray). As for the rails, the Air Force has those rails in all their cargo planes so they were rpobably put in the truck for tie downs of something and the AF could use the straps they have access to.

Lots of luck with your new ride.

The racks in your bed is known as E-Track. It is designed to accept tie-down straps and hardware.

You think it's long...YOU SHOULD SEE IT FROM HERE! I just got a new "wide screen" monitor and haven't set my resolution properly yet...:D

Nice looking truck though! I think the rails in the box are for tie downs.

Hey Curdy what size tires are those?

Those headlights are for the "W/T" model. They usually have vinyl seats and floorliner and more working oriented options.

When I fisrt looked at the pictures I thought that was paint as well. Turns out they're little nicks in the vinyl...almost looks like a cat got it. Its really not too bad though.

Not a bad guess I'd say. Here's what's interesting now that you mention the Air Force...The guy I bought it from lives very close to a base that just closed. So that certainly is a reasonable assumtion.

I'll have to double check but I believe they are 245/75/16

Haha, yeah the pictures I've posted so far are actually from the classified ad, which didn't have any engine pictures. I'll take a couple and post them. Very clean inside, only thing different is that the motor cover with the "Turbo Power" print isn't there.

mine is also a 98 yet my headlights look nothing like yours. maybe its a chevrolet thing while mine is gmc. i'd assume like camaro versus firebird. they have subtle little diffs. and yep thats a long truck, gonna have to learn to park away from other cars. i have the extended cab but only two doors and still it's a bugger to park. been fortunate haven't hit anything. wait till you do the 4 inch exhaust. it'll wake it up a bit. Thanks guys for all the replies! Here's a picture of the engine as requested...along with 2 shots of my riding buddy, Rocky. Although he's very camera shy, he never wants to miss the chance that we may go for a ride!

w/t = work truck

less expensive headlights, grille and such. More of a stripped down version than a Silverado or Scottsdale package.

By the way, where do you guys like to go Internet-wise to shop for parts and accessories? I used lmctruck.com for my '85. It's an awesome site/catalog, but is a little light on stuff for the 6.5L.

If you want performance parts for a 6.5 then look at www.heathdiesel.com are www.kennedydiesel.com They both have a good selection of parts for 6.5

Hey Curdy, What you have to pay for a truck like that? I am looking at picking up a 99 but it has more miles and it is a duelly. 3500 series. But it is a 4x4 and a crew cab.

curdy
10-23-2007, 09:55 AM
Paid less than $10,000 for it. What kind of trim does the truck you're looking at have? Are you planning on pulling a 5th wheel?

When I was seaching for mine, I wasn't looking to pay more for a dually, leather, and power options, because I'm not planning on using it for long trips or towing a 5th wheel. I was waiting for the right truck to come along that others would pass on because it was missing those types of extras.

I was looking up to 200 miles from my area. I was very happy when I found one less than 30 miles away!

BTW, here's the VIN: 1GCHK33F5WF038229

I can usually track down info online somewhere of what each part means, but I haven't had any luck with this one. Can anyone tell me where I can look? Looks like from what I've been reading from you guys there's a difference between having a F or a S in there, what's that all about?

A lot of my friends have been asking me what transmission is in there. I have no idea, and I'm hoping the VIN will tell me that.

Thanks!

8th digit of VIN yours is a F, for rest of truck info RPO list is most important, check glove box and compare against RPO list in FAQ.

Its more than very likely got the 4l80e in it. The only time anything else was really used is the 4l60e in a few 1/2 tons.

Early 6.5 may have 4L60, later 1/2 T have 4L80 his would have 4L80
