: Tow mirrors - defrost does not work

My dealer replaced my standard mirrors on my 7.5 LMM with tow mirrors that have electric glass adjustment/turn signal arrows (no electric fold). I was told the mirror defrost function would also work in these mirrors but we had our first foggy morning today and the defrost light comes on on the climate control knob but the mirrors did not clear.
My question, did the dealer fail to hook something up or were they blowing smoke when they told me these mirrors have the defrost function?
I called this morning and left a message for the parts manager that did the install but I have not heard back from him yet.

I have the same mirrors on my 02, and they do have the defrost feature. HOWEVER, I believe this only works if you also have the rear defrost option, just using the regular defrost will not defrost the mirrors, at least that is how it works in the older trucks...

The original mirrors had the defrost function. You push in on the far right climate control knob to activate the mirror and rear window defrost function. I don't have the rear window defroster because my truck has the electric sliding rear window but pushing the knob in is supposed to activate the mirror defrost cycle.

Hmm, can't be much help to ya as I have no experience with the newer trucks. Good luck!

Surely someone must have this type mirror on their LMM and can tell me if they defrost and where the controll is.

TBAs you stated, the mirror heater is controlled by the switch that turns on the rear window defroster elements whether you have the slider window (no heating elements) or the regular window (with heating elements). Did your original mirrors have the heating feature? If not, there may not be the correct wiring. If so, looks like the dealer didn't hook everthing up.

Yes, my original mirrors did have heat. I hope you are right that the dealer didn't hook everything up. I am taking it to the dealer Friday for a look-see. This isn't the first time I been amazed at the parts manager's lack of knowledge of these LMM's.

Thanks for your reply.

TBLet us know how this turns out - I'm considering going the other way - replace tow mirrors with standard power folding mirrors and I want to make sure all the features work - heat, night tint, power folding, tilt in reverse, etc. so I want to find out if all the power connections exist.

When they installed the tow mirrors, did they replace your door switch ?
I had small mirrors & went to tow mirrors. I had to buy a new door switch for the mirrors.

Jeff what trim level do you have ?

You will at the least need to replace the door switch if you go to power folding mirrors.

All the wiring was there in mine but I do have an SLT.

LTZ (which I believe is the asme as the SLT on the GMC) - so I'm guessing all the wiring is there. I checked at the local parts counter yesterday and the computer pictures don't show the extra switch that folds the mirrors in and out. I asked the parts guy to look at a couple of the HD's on the lot so he could see what the extra switch looks like. Also, the power folding mirrors on the LTZ comes with a color-matched cap but the parts guy was just finding the mirrors in black. I need to find a really good parts guy.

Yes the Ltz = Slt
The mirror switch is all together (mirror, windows, locks).
You will need the whole assy, & a new bezel (wood looking part).

I have mine that I removed (switch, bezel, mirrors).

Your best bet is find a truck on there lot that has the mirrors & switch that your looking for (make sure it is also an LTZ). Take the last 8 digits of the vin to your parts guy. If he cant find you the right parts with that info, you need to find a different parts guy.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
I'll be glad to help.

I took my truck in Friday and they took it into the garage to check out the mirriors to see if they have the defrost feature. They brought my truck back in about 20 min. and told me they do not have the defrost feature. I'm pissed!
First of all, in my mind, if the parts mgr. was worth a hoot he should have been able to just look at the mirrors and know wheather or not they are defrost type. This guy has already given me mis-information a couple of times about features on my truck.
I am going to take it to another dealer and see what they say. If they say "no defrost" then I am going to the General Mgr. where I bought the truck.
Tow mirrors were a deal killer when I first looked at the truck and I was told by the saleaman that they would put tow mirrors on it for me and they would have the defrost feature like the mirrors they took off.
Sorry for the long rant.

All heated GM mirrors have the "defrost squiggle" emblem on the glass (a little rectangle with vertical squiggles) in the bottom corner.

Not so true... none of my GM vehicles have had that marking for the last few years. the tow mirrrors do not have the marking even though they have defrost.

My tow mirrors on my OBS, 04 are heated, and do NOT have the "defrost squiggle". I have seen other heated mirror types that did not have it as well, so I would say that statement is not correct.

My apologies. I stand corrected (and am smarter now, too.) I learn something new every time I'm here.:)

Took my truck back to the dealer again yesterday to see if they can get the defrost function working. They just called and said it was ready and the defrost now works. I asked the service manager what the problem was and he said they had to reprogram it with the Tech II to get the defrost working.
Thanks for all of your replys.

I have the 2007.5 LT crew cab and have the rear non-sliding window. I got them to work with the rear window defrost button. Really cool to see the heating grid materialize in the mirror as it burns off the frost.
