: got d max today, HAS FLOOR SHIFTER?????
metalhead 12-01-2004, 12:36 AM Ordered my 05 dmax november first and delivered today. It has a floor shifter for the transfer case???? Censored Censored  Censored I didn't even know they still made those. Anyone have and input on reliability issues with electronic transfer cases over manual ones. Much apperciated.
Diesel Power 12-01-2004, 01:31 AM i'd probably take the manual had i had a choice...
SpoolinTurbo 12-01-2004, 01:40 AM I like my pushbutton, however I had plans for installing an aftermarket console on the floor so that precluded a floor transfer case shifter. I have yet to have any issues with the electronic transfer case and I change from 2wd to 4wd at least 20-30 times a day. I try to keep in 2wd as much as possible for fuel economy, but in some spots it's much too icy up here and 4wd will get me out of a driveway whereas 2wd just spins the wheels even if I am idling.
When i ordered my duramax back in march and recieved it in june I had forgot about the push button option. But now I am glad that I got the shifter on the floor since I can tell you that I have had my friends Chevy blow the fuse and it would not go into 4 wheel drive in the snow. His father had the same problem and now carries extras, and another friend blew a fuse and he was stuck in 4 wheel drive high. For me i'm am glad that it is on the floor now, takes just as much time if not less to shift manually. Also one less electrical thing to worry about.
I'd rather have the manuel also from what loco said.
gearhead 12-01-2004, 09:18 AM only the manual for me
dwrat 12-01-2004, 09:37 AM Don't have to worry about the manual not working.
9W3-HD 12-01-2004, 09:38 AM I think think the push putton is nice and convienient, especially when everything is new, they seem to shift in and out a lot quicker, but the more wear and tear they get, everything slows down, thats from what Ive seen anyways. If I didnt have a floor console I would rather have a manual shift.
aka108 12-01-2004, 09:55 AM You have a nice fail safe mechanical linkage rather than a switch, a fuse and some sort of selinoid device. Be glad you have the manual since it will keep working for you no questions asked.
partsguy662 12-01-2004, 10:21 AM metalhead - while the lever does take a while to "loosen up" on a new truck, I think you'll learn to like it...Personally, I wouldn't buy a truck with the push button because of the extra electronics involved...When I'm going into a sticky situation, yanking on a lever gives me quite a bit more confidence that something is going to happen....push the button..might work, might not....
skoryaro2 12-01-2004, 11:21 AM I hope I'm not going to jinx myself here but I've had the Electronic Shift on 3 different vehicles since 1994 and have yet to ever have it fail. I prefer it over that god awful upside baseball bat sticking out of the floor. Not to mention that on my '05 I got the bench seat to add more sitting positions and the manual would just be in the way.
My .02

1BADDMAX 12-01-2004, 12:34 PM I've had great luck with my lever. This is my 2nd truck with a floor lever for 4wd. My last truck, a 99 Z71, had the push button and I never had any problems with it either. I think using your 4wd frequently definitely makes it work better and loosens the lever.
Turfmower 12-01-2004, 04:40 PM I have a manual shifer in mine. Less electronic yuppy crap the better
cowdoc 12-01-2004, 05:07 PM I have owned two trucks with the push button shifter. Never had any real problems with either except a couple of times that they didn't want to shift from 2wd to 4wd on the first try. I have an '05 on the way. I ordered it with the floor shifter because I think that in the long run it will be more reliable. Just my .02
TC Dmax 12-01-2004, 05:26 PM I passed on the push button option, and went with the floor shifter. Just one less electronic gizzmo to worry about breaking.
Diesel Dragon 12-01-2004, 07:34 PM If I'm not mistaken the floor shifter only engages the Transfer case manually.
There is still an electric motor that engages the front diffrential and in turn the hubs.
Had the electric motor on my front diff go bad on my 93 about 9 years after I bought it.
Of course it was with my plow on, You should try driving a truck with a 9' heavy plow on the front end in 2wd in a snow storm....... NOT fun the ass end was all over the place but I made it to the dealer got a new one and all was good with the world again :)
keepin' it 12-01-2004, 09:08 PM I have the push button because I got a screamin' deal on the truck. I'd rather have the manual. I carry a spare actuator because at 18,788 miles on a 2002 I've been under the truck in the mud manually doing a transfer while the girlfriend inched the truck forward. While your at it, get a spare dildo (front axle actuator). Anoher GM weak point.
Mjollnir 12-01-2004, 10:16 PM I'd prefer the manual, but with the LT I think you have to get the pushbutton.

Frank Blum 12-01-2004, 10:28 PM I see we are almost at 10K members and have not read where the shifters either electric or manual are a problem. Later! Frank
marcdeluca 12-02-2004, 01:31 PM I have a friend who has a transmission shop, and he says that they see alot of transfer case shift motors fail. They are expensive. I prefer the manual shift.
skoryaro2 12-02-2004, 03:25 PM I wonder how many people who said they "did'nt want the extra electronics" in their truck have the DIC steering wheel controls?
jpekarek 12-02-2004, 04:30 PM I have had the pushbutton thing leave me stranded on the side of a mountain before on a different truck. It worked when it felt like it.
When I ordered my truck, I very specifically demanded the manual stick.
Turfmower 12-02-2004, 06:40 PM I wonder how many people who said they "did'nt want the extra electronics" in their truck have the DIC steering wheel controls?
NOT ME no Yuppie crap Bench vinyl seat and rubber floor mat
skoryaro2 12-02-2004, 07:24 PM NOT ME no Yuppie crap Bench vinyl seat and rubber floor mat
Boy, and I thought I was stripping it down when I got the SLE with a bench seat, no DIC and the standard stereo!
):h
metalhead 12-03-2004, 12:31 AM I've been shifting it into 4wd about 20 times a day and still stiff as hell. I sure hope it loosens up a bit. Sorta a pita.
Frank Blum 12-04-2004, 09:16 PM I do believe the front axle locks in the same on both systems. Later! Frank
ME4OSU 12-04-2004, 10:05 PM Had a buddy that had the push button, it went out twice . . . no 4x4 when he needed it. He did buy another one though on his Duramax so that says something. I myself got the floor shifter
BlackMaxx 12-04-2004, 11:11 PM I had a 91 Silverado with the manual floor shift. While you get the feeling that you are physically shifting the transfer case into 4wd, there is still an electrical motor that has to complete the transition into 4wd. Mine worked flawlessly for about 12 years and then stopped. I went to GM to get the replacement part and was told that I should buy the "newer improved design". I did but they could not provide any specific instructions on how to CORRECTLY install it. I did find some sort of instructions on the web but still did something wrong because the 4wd light was always on even when I knew I was in 2wd. So, there are still electronics involved and the manual shift has its flaws too.
My 2004 has the dash mounted switch setup and so far so good. I can say at this point that I think both are good.
mannytranny 12-04-2004, 11:45 PM Geeze Nancy
Using that floor lever shifter must be hell on those fancy nails.
chrisms31 12-05-2004, 02:04 AM I like buttons:D . I have the electronic and haven't had any problems yet.
Anybody know why we can't get the auto 4 like the yukon's. Probably sensors galore needed but that'd be cool? Anybody know?
turbo lcc 12-05-2004, 11:02 AM I wish I knew I could have gotten a manual shift. :(
