I have a whining noise in my Allison. Truck only has 2600 miles. It is a consistent whining noise that is especially noticeable when getting off the accelerator and letting the truck coast. Noise can also be heard as transmission is going through the gears. It will change pitch as r.p.m. increases with the motor.
All fluid levels are filled to capacity. First thing I checked.
Is this normal or possible pump problem?

The allison is expected to have some noise in it, but how much is hard to say. Best thing to do is drive another truck like yours and compare. This wont be an exact way of doing it, but will give you input on whats normal and what seems to be louder then. In all honesty, If all is functioning properly, I wouldnt spend too much time worrying about it. Its part of having a great transmission !

when your going slow and let off the pedal, you'll slow down pretty quick and hear this whining sound. that's the transmission braking. sounds awesome :D
maybe that's what your hearing

This noise is not in the power steering. Definitely coming from drive train.
nosliw.
Sound is present on acceleration as transmission is going through gears also. Not just on deceleration.
By the way love the transmission braking feature with this truck.
Thanks guys for the responses.

Robinhood,
I think it is normal for the trans to make the noise you are talking about. It is definately going to make more noise than your standard car or 1/2 ton light truck trans. There are a lot of people that know a lot more about these than I do, but I would hazard to say that if you can't hear it with the radio on a fairly low volume, nothing is probably wrong.
Personally, I'm with nosliw, I turn my radio off in order to hear it. :)

Dont worry about it, its the allison whinne they all do it mostly when tranny is cold its louder. The oil pump in the tranny has to move alotta oil and thats what yer hearing.

I came on the forum to see if I could find out why mine starting "whining" recently. It's a 2001 that I bought new.....just turned 107,000 miles. About 2,000 miles ago, I took it in and had all the fluids changed in front and rear diffs, tranny, etc. etc. The drive train has always been very quiet. Probably a 1,000 miles after the fluid changes I noticed a very distinct "whine" only when the drive train is under a load and does it hot or cold. Let off the gas....no whine.....get on the gas gently or hard .....whine. The other day while on expressway at just over 70 mph..it was very bad....almost like a tire noise but there is also a small vibration coming through the floorboards and steering wheel but like I said....it sounds like a tranny whining and only under load. Tires are almost new also.
I was just wondering if maybe the fluid change (done by Goodyear...not the chevy guys) would have caused something. Also, it just turned cold here (30's at night.....mid 40's daytime) so maybe that's it even though it has never done it over the past 3 winters I've owned it.
Any thoughts?

I just went and test drove it again and noticed that it must not be the tranny as the noise/vibration stayed the same when the tranny shifted so it must be the rear end. Wonder if maybe the rear end fluid is incorrect?
