depending on a trans or motor limp, it is where the computer sees a problem and goes into "oh shucks mode" and tries to save itself, but still let you get home. Trans limp usually limits shifting into hiher gears, engine limp is when it sees a problem and limits rpm to 2000 and has limited power. It is as says itll still go but your limping to get it off the road/to the next exit.

pull over and restart

Some times it takes 2-3 key cycles. Its faster just to clear the codes. Thats if you have a code reader/programmer.

I don't have one..........what's the 411 on the reader. Does the reader just report the problem? Is the reader different than a programmer?

A reader is usually just a scan tool that can read and clear codes. I wish I could tell you more, but I've never bought or looked for one so I can't say what brand(s) or price range you would be looking at.

A programmer is something that reprograms your ECM to give you more power from your truck. Many also include a scan tool that will read and clear diagnostic trouble codes. Some also include more indepth features that will allow you to do data logging and read enging functions like fuel rail pressure and balance rates. There are several different brands to choose from such as: Bully Dog, Superchips, Hypertech, Diablo Sport, Edge, PPE, etc. They range in price from around $300 up to around $1100 for the more powerful PPE unit.

I have a code reader/clearer I bought from Autozone. I think it's called "PocketScan". Seems like it was only around $50. It reads and clears codes and is nice and small.
