I have an 05 crewcab 4x4 LS. I love the pickup but the electric door locks are driving me crazy. This truck does not have the steering wheel controls so to change the door settings the owners manual says to pull on the blinker, turn the key on and off twice and push the unlock button until you get the desired door lock function. But I cannot set them to manual. I think if I can afford a $40,000 pickup I should be able to leave the doors unlocked if I want. Please help me.

It is a safety feature to prevent sue happy freaks from falling out of their own cars. Therefore it cannot be disabled. Best bet is to set it to lock/unlock in park. You will get used to it.

then why do the ones with controls on the steering wheel have a manual position

The 05's with steering wheel controls have a manual position for UNLOCK only. Your only choice with LOCK is out of park, or above 8mph.

Vehicle Personalization

Your vehicle is equipped with an automatic lock/unlock feature which enables you to program your vehicles power door locks. You can program this feature through the driver information center (DIC), or by the following method. See Driver Personalization (http://service.gm.com/servlets/CellHandler?CellId=62858&RefDoc=1545348&evc=sm) for more information on DIC programming.

Programmable Locking Feature The following is the list of available programming options:

Mode 1
All doors lock when the transmission is shifted out of Park.

Mode 2
All doors lock when the vehicle speed is greater than 8 mph (13 km/h).

The following instructions tell you how to change the automatic door lock mode. Choose one of the three programming options listed above before entering the program mode. To enter the program mode, do the following:

Begin with the ignition off. Then pull the turn signal/multifunction lever toward you and hold it there while you perform the next step.
Turn the key to RUN then back to LOCK twice. Then, with the key in LOCK, release the turn signal/multifunction lever. Once you do this, the doors will lock and unlock, the horn will chirp once, and a 30-second timer will begin. You are now ready to program the automatic door lock feature.
Press the lock side of the power lock switch once. You will hear one or two chimes. The number of chimes tells you which lock mode is currently selected. Continue to press the door lock switch until the number of chimes that you hear matches the number of the mode that you want. If you take longer than 30 seconds, the locks will automatically lock and unlock and the horn will chirp twice to indicate that you have left the program mode. If this occurs, you can repeat the procedure beginning with Step 1 to re-enter the programming mode.
You can exit the program mode any time by turning the ignition to RUN (the doors will automatically lock and unlock and the horn will chirp twice to indicate that you are leaving the program mode). If the lock/unlock switches are not pressed while in the programming mode, the current automatic settings will not be modified.

Programmable Unlocking Feature The following is the list of available programming options:

Mode 1
Drivers door unlocks when the transmission is shifted into PARK (P).

Mode 2
All doors unlock when the transmission is shifted into PARK (P).

Mode 3
All doors unlock when the key is removed from the ignition.

Mode 4
No automatic door unlock.

The following instructions tell you how to change the automatic door unlock mode. Choose one of the four programming options listed above before entering the program mode. To enter the program mode, do the following:

Begin with the ignition off. Then pull the turn signal/multifunction lever toward you and hold it there while you perform the next step.
Turn the key to RUN and LOCK twice. Then, with the key in LOCK, release the turn signal/multifunction lever. Once you do this, the doors will lock and unlock, the horn will chirp once, and a 30-second timer will begin. You are now ready to program the automatic door unlock feature.
Press the unlock side of the power lock switch once. You will hear one, two, three, or four chimes. The number of chimes tells you which unlock mode is currently selected. Continue to press the door unlock switch until the number of chimes that you hear matches the number of the mode that you want.

I get ya, but some times ya gotta sit back and really look hard at what you are mad at. You could instead try being happy with the fact that you can afford a 40k truck. You could be driving a Pinto with coat hangers for door locks. Think positive thoughts, breathe deep, and relax... You have a Duramax.

Thanks your right. I guess

I would think someone would know how to disable the auto locks with a wire cut or relay??
My new Duramax is going to be here next week, and I'll need to fiqure a way to stop the auto locks. Would be a real pain on the farm, like rock picking where I many times just slid it into neutral and get in and out a million times.
Two clicks up from there and you are in park! BAM! The doors unlock! (Unless you are talking manual) Seriously, there arent any wires or relays, It is all controlled within the BCM. You could pull the fuses and turn your 40K ride into a strippy-the-wonder-Silverado I guess:confused:

I do not need my truck to look pretty in town. I need my truck to make up for my unusually small penis. You, on the other hand, are one of the bright individuals that doesn't need silly things like, PARK, SEAT BELTS, AIR BAGS, DOOR LOCKS, ETC. You think it is smart to bail out of your truck before it has stopped moving to chuck rocks? What if you were bent over, tuggin' on a biggun, and bust a nut? Then, a turkey flies into the truck and bumps the shifter into drive, and runs you and your busted nut over? As if it isn't bad enough to have a busted nut, now you've just been run over by a turkey! NO SH!T it ratchets going into park when you are STILL MOVING! I get paid by how fast I can do a job, but you won't find me jumpin' out and racing the truck to open my stall door because I don't have time to come to a complete stop and put it in park! Maybe you need a horse and buggy?

Max, you really need to give some warning about posts like this. Wrecking keyboards, spraying coffee all over the monitor and having coffee drooling out of my nose is not a pretty sight.

But I enjoyed it.

A California (or course) jury gave a woman 4.9 billion dollars (that's with a "b") because her car caught fire after being in a bad wreck.

Things like that would make any company paraniod about being sued.

With an many cars as GM makes, if they allowed lock-disable, someone would have a kid open the passanger door and fall out. Proabably a kid sick with cancer on the way to chemo, the only child of a single mother...max sympathy. The jury would give her 20 billion.

The problem, in my case, is that when dropping off or picking up passengers, they ALWAYS pull the door handles with MAXIMUM FORCE while the truck is stopping, not when it is completely stopped. The only options are 1) BEST - Remember to hit the unlock switch while rolling in to a stop, 2) Roll in hot and lock up the brakes in front of the passengers and throw into park, or 3) watch in panic as the passenger is standing there with your door handle in his hand and stupid look on his face. Not good options ! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/rant.gif

That reply by Max Payne is one of the funniest things I've ever read on this forum. Maybe he could write for Jeff Foxworthy. He has real talent.

Maybe one of the tech's on here can answer this, cause it drives me crazy also. My friend at work just took his 05 Dodge in to the dealer (it does the same thing) and they reprogrammed the locks. No questions. Can this be done on the GM's?
