What are the advantages of a custom pcm other than their ability to remove the rev and speed limiter. Are there any hp or performance gains from a custom pcm. My truck is a 2001 dmax.

Well, with gas vehicles fuel and spark curves can be altered for increased performance, i.e. a custom PCM tweak for a 1995 - 96 Chevy LT1 engine can be as much as 25 HP. Also, things like shift points and line pressure can be addressed. Shift points can allow the engine to wind longer before a shift allowing the engine to get deeper into the power band, and line pressure is somewhat similar to a shift kit that allows quicker and more firmer shifts. This results in less slippage and more power transfered to the driving wheels. In the diesel world there are several vendors offering inline "boxes" that make these changes with the added benefit of quickly returning your truck to stock with out the use of a laptop, and others that offer a handheld tuner that simply uploads a more aggressive tune to the PCM. There have been gains reported in excess of 200 HP and 300 lbs ft of torque. To gain more information on this subject I would suggest a search on tuners. Plenty of good info by the guys & gals that use them. JP
