: 7-Way trailer socket...Bumper mount?
Lawnboy 11-29-2004, 08:30 PM I replaced my OEM reciever hitch and need to mount my 7-Way trailer socket into the bumper. I drilled my 2" hole to the left of the license plate.
The problem I have is that the OEM socket is designed for the twist in mount of the factory bracket. It would be very difficult to cut the proper design in the bumper to allow it to "twist in" as it does in the factory bracket.
I know a LOT of guys have done this conversion, however I am asking where you purchased a socket with 4 holes through it to mount it (easy to find), but with the factory weather-pak push in harness in the rear.
Last resort, I'll cut and install a "universal" one as pictured, but would like "plug and play" on the back end to help with corossion and weather tightness.
Any chance GM has these for other trucks without the factory reciever hitch?
Lawnboy 11-30-2004, 10:18 AM I need a socket that looks like this picture on the back end.
All I've ever seen was the universal type with a white rubber grommet on the back end, and you strip and screw clamp each individual wire on inside.
This one pictured is even silicone sealed on the inside. Real nice unit, but as you can see, the mounting flanges prevent a simple flush mount.
Lawnboy 11-30-2004, 10:21 AM Here are the flanges that prevent me from a simple flush mount. That, and there are no places to drill on the upper (hinge) end.
BK Tool 11-30-2004, 10:29 AM I would check with a local U-Haul or trailer dealer. I just picked up a pigtail setup that I used to add a flat type connector so I didn't have to splice into the factory wiring. Needed to hook up my Line Of Fire light bar. These setup has the weather pack connections like you are looking for.

Lawnboy 11-30-2004, 11:11 AM I'm going to check with my dealer first. See if they have any GM applications that "Bolt on" rather than these twist on type.
I really don't want to go with a metal one. These plastic Pollak ones are real nice. Stout hinge and spring, nice rubber gasket on door, and fully sealed with silicone inside and out.
Diesel Power 11-30-2004, 11:31 AM here's what i did: die grinder to old hitch. removed the vertical plate the plug mounts to. welded that to new hitch... problem solved!
sprintmod1 11-30-2004, 11:37 AM Second DieselPower except that we welded it to the bottom of the bumper and to the left far enough to easily get the hitch pins in and out. (Did not want to weld it to new hitch since there are all types of warnings about drilling, welding, etc., on it).
Lawnboy 11-30-2004, 04:57 PM I went to my GMC dealers parts counter. All he had was the OEM rotary lock type that I already had.
So I went to Wally World and got this Hoppy one. It has a 8" (silicone sealed at both ends) harness coming out the back that connects to the original OEM weather-pak round connector. This unit also has the 4 wire type (with dust boot) along side the normal 7 wire. Plastic doesn't look quite as durable as the OEM one, but it's still built rather well. I used stainless steel bolts to attach it.
Lawnboy 11-30-2004, 05:01 PM Another with the 4 wire dust cover removed.
Also, chopping up the original receiver hitch just to get the mounting bracket off was never an option. I will be selling it, and I'm sure the future owner would like it to be there too.
Plus, with plowing snow, I want everything UP and out of the way out back. If it hangs low, it'll likely get left somewhere in a snow bank.
Joe Pool 12-01-2004, 05:02 PM For those that are interested in one of these plugs, the Hoppy part number is 40955.

CalDirt 01-09-2005, 11:27 AM Lawnboy - if you moved it up to your bumper, what's down on your bracket now if you didn't remove it? Is it just a blank space since you've re-routed the socket and wiring up to your bumper?
Lawnboy 01-09-2005, 11:16 PM I had to remove my factory receiver hitch in order to mount the hitch that came with my salt spreader. This new receiver did not come with provisions for the trailer plug.
