I just received my 2008 extended cab & chassis truck with a knapheide utility body on it. The utility body is 8 feet wide. The rear doors can open past 90 degrees and hit the body. My local dealer told me I have to live with it. Does anyone know if GM is suppose to use different hinges for cab & chassis trucks? It seems to me GM overlooked this problem. Anyone who purchases a cab & chassis will be putting an 8 foot wide body on it and will have the same problem.

Oh, that really sucks! Sorry I'm no more help than that.

Can't you just fashion up a lanyard to catch the doors at 90*, like the jeep wrangler set up?

Either that, or find some small rubber bumpers to stick onto the utility body where the door hits it.

I haven't ssen what that hinge looks like, but you may be able to put a bead of weld on the actual hinge itself to keep it from opening past a particular point.

Thanks guys. They are all good ideas. Since the dealer could care less I ran them past a local auto body shop and here is what they said.

-Chains will get caught in the jambs when the door closes.
-Regarding a rubber bumper or door stop. The door skins are not re-enforced, at least not well enough, on the rear doors. So they will probably dent and crease where the door hits the rubber.
-Welding seems to be the best option. The hinges are actually a dual stage hinge. Basically a hinge within a hinge. The inner or second hinge looks as though it could be welded and painted again. But they warned me that the weld will break over time because of the leverage.

The best option would be for GM to offer the original hinge like on the 06's for the chassis trucks.

The one I looked at had stops at the first position so why not just stop there? Wonder if the hinges are interchangealbe with the older ones? Kinda want to know because I'd like to make mine open that far...

you might just try going over the heads of the dealer and go straight to GM.

Gm only has one hinge for thier trucks for the rear doors, as far as the dealer not caring, not much they can do...its a enginnering deal....
I would look at the hinge and see if i could weld a stop on the second stop, to prevent the 3rd "opening" from engauging.

why not drill a hole and put a small scew in it as a stop wouldnt break or anything

not sure if it will work just thinking

For 08 they show 2 different hinges, 170 degrees single wheel trucks & 164 degrees on dual wheel trucks.

Maybe you have the 170 hinges.
