Hey folks,
I am having some major concerns with my truck:confused: . Yesterday on my return from thanksgiving vacation I was travelling down I-5 at 70mph while on cruise control, fuel tank was down to less than 1/4 and the max started puking-:t greyish/white smoke. As soon as I took it off of cruise it stopped? I continued my travels and got down the road further and fuled up, continued on my way and it started spuing smoke as I merged onto the highway, I eased of the pedal and the smoke stopped. Just FYI I was not romping on it and I have zero mods! I again put it on cruise at slightly below 70mph and it did it again? What the hell could be going on? Water in the Fuel or injection problems, no engine warning lights came on and the fuel mileage did not seem to be affected. I tried romping on it several times and could not get it to smoke again. Do you think I may have water in my fuel tank since it started to happen when I got fairly low on fuel?? Your theories would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Smokin

First of all you posted in the wrong forum so a Moderator will likely move it shortly.

Second you should post details of your truck in your signature. We don't know what if you have an LLY or LB7 or what year etc.

You should try to drain your water seperator on your fuel filter. Perhaps you got a gulp of water.

There could also be several other things wrong such as injectors. Again, we don't know if you have an LB7 or an LLY.

Please post more specifics on your truck and hopefully someone will be able to help.

Good luck!

Smokin,
Sounds like water. Did you notice any strange popping/missing like sounds associated with the smoke? If so you have probably took on a little water. Do you run any fuel additives? Water will usually start to draw in at about 1/4 tank because this is about when the sender cup starts drawing from the bottom of the cup (tank bottom). Before that the sender cup fills from the top (about 1/4 the way up in the tank and away from the water)

Well took it to the steeler and they found a dirty/clogged airfilter, so clogged it broke the airfilter change indicator. I had been driving in heavy traffic with lots of rain in Seattle that probably contributed to this. Anyone know of any extra things I can do to keep water out of the air intake other than not live in the rainy Northwest?

Bear,
Yes it did make some puttering sounds a couple of times like it was misfiring. It had to have been gulping for air or gulping moisture? Good call. Thanks for your input.

Your air filter was that clogged up on a 2004? Strange. I seriously doubt a clogged air filter broke your filter minder. Did they charge you for a new one? Did you see the old one?

What year model? I have '02 that had the same problem. After months of waiting for SES light, finally got injector code. They replaced one injector, which didn't solve the problem. Another month passed of white smoke pouring from the exhaust and the local dealership got the o.kay to replace all injectors, no problem since. All covered under warranty. By the way, the injectors were on back-order for over 3 weeks, truck in the shop for almost 2 months.

I got one for you. I have an 04 2500 HD Dmax LLy CC with les then 1300 miles on it and it's been in the shop now three times as of today it's still there. Smoking like crazy black/white/grey and engines sounded like it was missing it timing. The dealer says my tank was half full of water and half diesel. So they droped the tank and flushed. Get this it's not covered, it's costing $600.00 out of my pocket! They said I purchased bad diesel, the truck was even towed in for service, and the same thing happen. Very disappointd with the dmax. dealer sugest I gas up at places with an high output of diesel. anyway good luck with your rig, flushing diesel fuel not covered under warranty.
