Read the "cluster repair" writeup in the DIY articles. Typically the Speedometer goes first, but the stepper motors are all the same.

Also, search "speedometer" for more info.

On my 95 3500HD the tach went out and it was the alternator bad. I guess the pickup for the tach is in the alternator. I had it checked at autozone and they told me the alternator was good but chevy dealer checked it and said it was bad. Changed alternator and tach works perfectly now.

Mine started doing the same thing last weekend. I was going to ignore it until I got some free time, but your alternator issue's got me concerned.

What a great site this is! It's amazing to be able to do a quick search about a seemingly random problem and find this so quickly.

I have heard that there is a recall on the Silverado Speedometer cluster. Anyone receive one? I am interested in having the stealer repair my tach and speedometer as the stepper motors are bad. If there is a recall then we can get it fixed for free. I am waiting on a call from the dealer currently..Jim

See the post in the "interiors" section, there's a copy of the letter - probably a couple weeks back now.

Called the Stealer and the whole cluster will be replaced free of charge next Thursday. Requires overnight stay while the factory imprints your mileage into the new cluster and then overnights it back to the stealer. Hopefully it is not the same stepper motor setup or it will just be a matter of time...Jim
