I am looking to purchase a Viper alarm with remote start, I see people on here are using compustar alarms. I have a viper in my gasser and it worked really well. I would like some input Please Thank you PS I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif

I spoke to my local dealer in Edmonton yesterday about the Viper 791XV. I had a viper alarm in my old gasser and I installed it myself (WITH a warranty). This guy wants to charge me $700.00 CDN to install the unit PLUS $400.00 for the unit. When I tell him that I want to install it myself he tells me that there will be no warranty if I do the install. Damned if I am shelling out that kind of dough for some idiot to thrash my interior as well as use crimp type connectors instead of doing the job properly with solder. I am going to look around for someone who will offer warranty on a DIY setup. May have to call the factory. Anyone know if the remote start voids the warranty on a new truck? Also: Does anyone have any opinions on these new 2 way LCD responder transmitters that come with the Viper? I spoke to one person who was not happy about the fact that they are too delicate and break down easy AND are expensive as hell to replace. The guy at the install place would not come right out and say so but did hum and haw about it. The 791XV only comes with one transmitter too!
Suggestions welcome.

I had Circuit City do my gasser and they did solder all the wires. I never had a problem with it, But they made a hole in my headliner and I made they give me a second remote for the alarm. I will not accept that if they f--k up my trim in this truck. I just don't have the time to do it myself. Cost was $600 or $700 installed.

Take a look at the Astrostart, too. It's pretty gucci and pretty easy to install. . .

I think I'm lacking something here, but when everyone puts an aftermarket starter, like astrostart or whatnot, is it being combined with an alarm system as well or only the remote entry?

I considering getting an alarm system as well, just dont want to carry like 3-4 different remotes.

I'm figuring it this way, 1 keyless entry, 1 remote start, 1 alarm ? I know there are packages out there that do all of the above.. Or are what you guys are talking about have all in one?

Think I'm on crack for asking this..

My system is the viper remote start system. It integrates with your onboard systems already installed from the factory. The remotes from Viper replace the remotes from the factory. Your passlock II system is still in the loop. If I go buy a Viper alarm system, it integrates with the starter, and I still have one remote. I press lock, it goes Beep and it's locked. If I had an alarm, it'd still beep but if you tried to jack with my truck it'd go nuts. The vehicle still has the whole stock theft deterrent system ie if you lock it with the interior lock or the remote and the doors are unlocked without use of the key or remote fob, your car starts sounding the horn and flashing the lights. If you had the alarm as well, the siren would sound. If you had a 2 way system, your remote would start going nuts as well and you could go out and...umm.. deal with the issue.

I have a secondary antitheft system... Mark 1 Mod 0 German Shepherd Dog, one each. She's usually in the backseat and REALLY dislikes anyone coming near the truck... plus she's bite trained and vehicle defense trained.. anyone gets in the truck other than me, or without me there... hope you have some thick clothing on because you're gonna get chased down, bit, drug down, and bit more until I get there.

Max Power if you PM him will provide you all the info, etc., that you will need to self install an Astro Start remote start/security system all in one. Quite a few members here who have installed them with MaxPower's assistence.

BlueOx03 will do the install of a Compustar system for you. He is in RI.

I am hopefully getting a Compustar installed next week by BlueOx!

Thanks for the intel guys. I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do, so far I've been doing research on the viper and code alarm (CA has a turbo timer integrated so that is tempting me!)

My viper has remote start, timed start variable in duration of run time and interval, and turbo cooldown timer. It'll also operate a seperate circuit if I want to, for anything else I would want turned on on the truck.... probably will wire it up to the air horn's solonoid eventually. Some dude's a bit too close to the truck.. HAAAAWWWWNNNKKKKK

BLACKMAXX,
I have the 791XV. It's been on my truck for a year now. I love it. No problems. The 2 way pager really works good great distance. Very handy when you are inside a building and can't see your truck. I paid $400 installed. Installation was good all soldered connections.

Viper makes good stuff, any DEI stuff is a safe pick. Audiovox is good as well. I prefer Compustar myself. As far as the units themselves there's a lot of good stuff out there, you just got to decide what you want. I've said it time and time again and I'll stand by it...the biggest factor is the install. If the don't solder, you don't want it. If you have the time and the know how, you can make it a DIY project.

It's all about you and what you want...
