: Got Revos?
motovet 11-28-2004, 02:21 AM I have been running 265's for a long time now and am ready for some new tires and rims as they are starting to loose some chrome. Anyway, I am going with new. 16x8" rims and either 265 or 285's. I tow 10,000# on occasion, and run big power always.
So tell me what you think of your Revos in either size and how they work for you in similar situations. I could go for the look of the 285's, but don't want to loose the performance I have had with the 265's..... What to do?
Max Power 11-28-2004, 03:22 AM I love mine. Now that it has snowed and it is icy, I can really appreciate them. The only minor complaint was I had a bit of tread squirm when they were brand new. It seemed to go away after a few days.
JohnnyO 11-28-2004, 07:35 AM I just put the Revo's on. Only have about 100 miles on them. They are a much smoother ride than the OEM. I noticed the squiggle that Max Power mentions. Also there is a very slight hum at about 40-50 mph. And I mean slight. You will never notice it if you weren't trying to see how quiet they are.
I've rode them in the rain and on dry pavement. The handling is MUCH better. In turns they are very responsive, there is no sway like the old tires. There is also no rubber squeel on the turns. I havn't tried them in the snow.
They do pick up stones in the cleats a lot more than the OEM's.
All in all a very good tire. Worth the extra money.

dmaxalliTech 11-28-2004, 12:06 PM I looked at Revo's when looking to replace my BFG's, ended up with Michelin MTX M-S. 285's on 8" rims... Best tire I have ever put on a truck, super traction in the snow, quiet, good ride. Better weight capacity then BFG's too. Sidewall rating shows 3350lbs at 65 psi. I plowed all day last week in 2wd, didnt need 4x4 with these tires... Might be different with more then 3" of snow that I was moving though.
Fred G 11-29-2004, 12:12 PM My 03CC was delivered with 265BFG's which I had also used on previous trucks. Last week at 44K miles I replaced them with Revo's in the same size. Compared to the BFG's they are:
- quieter at all speeds
- ride smoother at the same PSI settings (55/45 F/R)
- do have more "squirm" than the BFG's, more like my wife's trailblazer, but I got used to that pretty quickly
- seem to have better wet traction, not as much "easy" wheelspin/chatter around corners like the BFG's
I read all the reviews at tirerack.com and the Revo's got great ratings from everyone. I priced BFG's ($640), Revo's ($690), Michelin LTX MS ($700) and LTX AT ($800+). Went with the Revo's over the LTX's due to the higher snow/rain ratings that people gave them.
ANY of these tires will out perform the stock tires....not a bad one in the bunch.
motovet 11-29-2004, 03:39 PM Thanks so far.....I am on my third set on this truck. I have tried Toyos and most recently the Nittos. I have settled on the Revos for my next set, but have really restled with the thought of going to the 285's over the tried and true 265's.
I was just concerned with possibly loosing towing and other performance issues with the bigger size. 285's treat you well while towing Eric?
Max Power 11-29-2004, 07:25 PM I don't think you will see much of a loss going from 265 to 285.
craSSh 11-29-2004, 07:43 PM If I'm not mistaken the 265's have a load range of E, while the 285's are only D. I have the 285's and love em.
Prophet 11-29-2004, 08:13 PM If I want to mount a set of Revos to a set of H2 17"x8.5", which size would you choose? Choices are limited and load ratings are limited.
-P.
motovet 11-29-2004, 08:37 PM Yes....265's are rated E while the 285's drop down to D...part of the dilemma. Crash, are you towing any weight with those? Also what back spacing?
Bronco 11-29-2004, 08:54 PM Unforunetly the Revos do not come in a 17" D or E rating. Have to stick with the 265/70/16 E or the 285/75/16 D.
I have been running the Revos (265) on stock rims for over 22000 miles. When brand new they did track a little. Realised it takes very little steering wheel input to create big change. Had to learn to be very suttle.
As far as performance is concerned here goes.
Balance= approx. 1 ounce per tire. no more.
Noise= very little. Very slight hum when radio is off.
Traction=Excelent dry handling. Excelent wet handling. Good snow handling. Fair ice
handling.( Good when new.)
GreatOff road handling however mudders or off road only tires are better.
Treadwear= These puppys will be shot at 25K. This is with very little burnouts. Towing 3500LB trailer approx. 15000 of the 23000 miles.
Overall it is a good tire. Need to monitor air pressure. Found 60 in front and 55 in rear to be the best with my load and rim.
No clearance issues whatso ever. Can still use chains. Next set will be 285's. Need 8" rim. Trimmed front fender. More torsion bar. Maybe even a 1" block in the rear. This would allow for no clearnace problems even off road and with chains. Otherwise expect some slight rubbing when turning and bouncing.
Noticed no performance problems. I like first gear a little longer.
I would guess the 285's won't be a problem untill 4th and 5th gear while towing up hill. Probally tend to stay in fourth more often however fourth will be a little taller. Maybe not a bad thing? Probally wont see overdriv while towing unless on more level ground. Well atleast thats how it works here at altitude.
craSSh 11-29-2004, 08:55 PM I'm not towing anything too big...Massey Ferg 231, 18' Chapparal, 26' Boston Whaler
blizzardplowman 11-29-2004, 08:59 PM I too am running Revo's- 1 set of 265's and 1 set of 235/85's- great wet traction even pluunig the 9k gn trailer. I run Blizzacks in the winter for plowing, just a personal choice.
ryeguy 11-30-2004, 12:28 PM Treadwear= These puppys will be shot at 25K. This is with very little burnouts. Towing 3500LB trailer approx. 15000 of the 23000 miles.
That's it? Wholey crap, that's bad! Is this the norm, what I can expect too? I like the looks of the tires, but will certainly pass if that's all I can get out of them for mileage. I got 64k miles out of my Coopers, and then they went onto a buddy's 3/4-ton. I do about 30k miles per year.

I put 65k on a set of the Michelin 285's and then sold them for $200 in the local Pennysaver. I decided to try the Revo's and after 5k miles I like them. Obviously it's too soon to have any idea if they are going to hold up like the Mich's but they are a lot quieter than I thought they would be and they have a lot more grip in the rain. The Michelin's would break loose easily in the Florida ice

HOLY SH*T!!! 25K is all you got!!!
I sure as H*LL hope I get more than 25k outta mine! Paid a pretty penny for em and the road mileage warranty is supposed to be 50k (assuming you have the dealer that installed em rotate em every 3k) for this tire. While I probably won't have the dealer rotate them as I am able to do that on my own I may reconsider if 25k is all you are getting. Is this 25k a guess or were your tires actually worn past the wear bar at 25k???
motovet 11-30-2004, 03:27 PM Trace, what backspacing on those rims? Any clearence issues? And lastly have you towed anything with those?
Bronco 11-30-2004, 03:50 PM The Revos have two different treadbar wear indicators. The first is up at about 3/16 ".
This is to let you know that your are into the second layer of tread compound. It is a little softer rubber to insure good traction even with low tread.
The second tread bar is at the standard 2/32" . This tells you that you are shot.
I passed the first treadbar at 20000 miles. I am guessing I will be shot at 25K. So yesit is a guess. I will update as time goes by.
The tire store guy did tell me that these tires never make it to the 50k warranty. I am guessing I will get almost 100.00 per tire on the warranty.
Enigma 11-30-2004, 06:17 PM Wow, these tires are rated very highly on tirerack.com, even in the treadwear catagory. Please do keep us posted as to how long the tires last once they hit the softer compound, I certainly hope they give you more than just 25k. Maybe it's time to visit the dealer for that free rotation, ensure they will honor the warranty... hhhmmmm
motovet 11-30-2004, 07:33 PM For those of you with the 285's on 8" rims, I would like to know the backspacing you run, any clearence issues, and performance for towing....daily driving etc. Thanks.
JRKRACE 12-01-2004, 12:19 AM I used to run the 285/75-16 BFG's on an Eagle Alloy 101 16X8 wheel with,IIRC,a 3 3/8 backspace. The Stock rim is 4.5 give or take. On my 2002 GMC I just cranked the bars slightly and modified the wheel well liners a little bit and had no rubbing unless it was a mother of a bump with the wheels turned. On my 2004, forget it. It seems like I have to chop apart the truck to make them fit. If I had to do it again, I would recommend a wheel close to the 4.5 backspace. It just tucks everything in a little better..
letsgo 12-01-2004, 05:37 PM Just tryed to buy Revo,s and it turns out, Bridgestone has them back ordered in Ontario Canada till dec. 14.
not a good sign, snows a comin!!!!!
Max Power 12-01-2004, 05:39 PM I had that problem this spring. It seems they can't make them fast enough!
Motohead 12-01-2004, 07:45 PM I have new Revos and like them so far. The ride is much better than the original firestones. They do like to throw stones...if I did a lot of gravel roads I would not like them.
a bear 12-01-2004, 09:46 PM I have about 35K on a set of 265's with plenty more tread to go and only 2 rotations on them. I know! I know! but I've always lacked when it comes to tire rotations. Also as stated the tires provide great handling with excellant wet traction. They really stick to the road in rainy conditions. They do pick up more rocks than less aggressive tires when new but get better as the rubber edges round off some. I will more than likely do a repeat on my next set.
TraceF 12-03-2004, 09:49 AM Trace, what backspacing on those rims? Any clearence issues? And lastly have you towed anything with those?
I am not sure what the backspacing is but they are basic American Racing 16x8 wheels. It seems like I read 4.5 inches maybe. I towed a 11,000 pound boat about 10 % of the time.
neverenuf 12-03-2004, 01:59 PM Read this thread I started last year. 285's suck for towing. I just replaced with 265's.http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2102
