: FRAM Filter??
Busdriver75 10-03-2007, 08:46 PM i am getting ready to do my 75K mile service. i change my oil every 5K because of the towing i do on the farm, and i'm planning on changing the tranny fluid and spin on filter every 25K starting now. the auto shop (NAPA) that i buy my supplies from sold me a FRAM filter (P9264). Will this filter be ok? i've run FRAM filters for as long as i can remember in my vehicles and never had any issue.
Thoughts?
Comments?
Dr_goodwrench66 10-03-2007, 08:56 PM I think it all boils down to personal preference...Personally I don't want any Fram's on my trucks. The OEM filter can be bought cheap at Valley Truck Parts(MI) or equivilent Allison service facility...
Quick 6 Racing 10-03-2007, 08:59 PM Napa sells Fram ???
Up here in the great white north, they sell Wix filters not Fram.
Busdriver75 10-03-2007, 09:03 PM yeah, its not a NAPA store, more like an independent NAPA Dealer i would say. they're great for parts and knowledge. i think i'm gonna run with the
Fram because i've never had any issues.
How much tranny fluid will it take when i change the spin off filter and drain the pan? i can't find it in the book, just what type to use.
speaking of tranny fluid, is Dexron III ok as the book says? or should i search for Transynd or something else?
whiteeye42 10-03-2007, 10:57 PM i think it takes about a pint to fill the spin on (note fill the spin on filter before you reinstall it and also make sure you move the magnet from the old filter and put it on the new one) 25k mile is a little long on that filter you should be change it every other oil change at least that is what my local allison dealer told me and it their trans so they should know
dmax3500 10-03-2007, 11:04 PM i wouldn't put a fram filter on a lawn mower, there are pics on this forum that show these things are full of cardboard parts ,and they show gm filters cut open too and they look 100 times better,, these engines cost $12,000-$15,000,trannys cost $5,000, i'd ather spend 8.00 -12.00 for a factory oil filter and 8.00-22.00 for a factory tranny filter, and i don't like the price but i put factory fuel filters [that cost $32.00 at wholesale trade ],that old comercal said ''you can pay me now or you can pay me later''
Busdriver75 10-04-2007, 07:58 AM now that you guys have me regretting my latest filter purchase (not installed yet) i believe i am going to return the FRAM filters i bought yesterday and get WIX filters.
Does anybody know what part number for the WIX oil filter?
Fuel Filter part number??
Spin on Tranny Filter part number??
Thanks in advance!

How about a ACDelco PF2232? Fuel filter, ACDelco 89060534, Allison spin on, 29539579. Hope this helps...
mwswarrior 10-04-2007, 11:24 AM Wix filters:
Oil: 57202
Trans: 57701
Fuel: 33910
DURAtotheMAX 10-04-2007, 01:05 PM The allison filter is unique in many ways and has several key design elements for a reason. Is it worth your trans to run a non-OEM filter? Plus, the filters are all of 7 bucks at your local allison dealer.

cowboyjer 10-04-2007, 01:15 PM Look closely at the wix trans filter. The wholes are closer to the center, and the magnet will partially cover them. Find an allison shop and you can buy the allison filter for $7.00 -10.00. I concur that I would not put a fram filter on my lawn mower. There is a reason you can buy fram for less than quality filters.
BTW, I do run wix oil and fuel filters, just not on the ally.
Anyone here ever open a baldwin fuel filter? The skin was so thick on my last one, I finally gave up.

X2 Couldn't have said it better myself Ben.
Is this another start to the monthly Fram argument?
No Fram of any kind for me... ever.
maxheadroom 10-04-2007, 01:35 PM I'm not too sure about the Balwin brand filters. I work for the city here and tried to use our Balwin rep to get some for my '03 2500HD. They wouldn't sell them. They say that they can not handle the pressure the engine makes and that they will blow apart
Busdriver75 10-07-2007, 08:39 PM you guys are pretty convincing. i'm buying allison OEM spin on filters from here on out.
when i change the filter, i want to drain the fluid and replace. i've found about 100 different threads on the capacity and about 100 different answers.
i want to know how much fluid it will take when i change the filter and drain the tranny by pulling the plug on a 2003. i've searched the manual high and low and haven't found the capacity for the tranny, only recommended fluid.

Even ON THE West coast NAPA doesn't sell Fram junk,,

Ditto. I almost overlooked this. Could have been a real disaster had i not noticed. I don't think there would have been much if any fluid at all passing the filter with the Wix spin-on and the stock magnet.
thejdman04 10-12-2007, 07:51 PM online vendor, local ally dealer or heavy truck center.

On a stock, oem pan, you should get around 7 to 9 quarts. The best way is to measure what you drain out. By measuring the drained fluid cold, you will get the exact amount, if you can leave the truck idle overnite while draining the fluid...
cranedriver 10-14-2007, 08:36 AM Hey guys check out this link on spin-ons in the maintence forum. I posted some pics of different filters with the magnet on them.

steady eddie 10-14-2007, 11:00 AM This is right now info:
I just returned from Pacific Power Products,
having a 5000-mile spin-on replacement and
trans-tune. They are a full-on Allison Shop in
Ridgefield, Wa.
Long story short--they used a damned FRAM
filter on my Allison-unknown to me at the time-
and that ain't half the story:
IT LEAKS!!
I am pissed!! I think I am going to have to change
it out in my driveway, rather than to spend the gas money to have them change it, maybe to another
screwed-up Fram Filter. I spent over $280 there and
got a leaky Fram, I expected a real, red, Allison brand
filter...

remember the actual replacment fluid qty will vary from trans to trans...if you just drop the man, you can get anywhere from 5-11 qts loss...BUT that is nowhere near the actual capacity of the trans. On a complete rebuild where everything is empty (converter, cooler, trans, valve body) you will use almost all of a 5 gallon bucket to refill it.

dmaxthad 10-14-2007, 11:41 AM What is this so called magnet that you guys speak of. I bought my truck used a year and a half ago and do all my own fluid changes on it. I never saw a magnet on tranny filter. Also how would i go about doing a full flush to switch over to the transynd fluid. I noticed that someone mentioned letting the truck idle over night-WTF??

The trans filter should have a magnet on it. Very easy to get lost, especially if someone does the filter change without knowing about the magnet. Just got thrown away with the old filter.
Best place to get one is from a local Allison dealer along with a half dozen or so filters. Just don't attempt to buy one from your local chevy dealer. (sticker shock).
As for fluid change do a search on the "hoot" method. Lots of posts on this forum regards that. While at the Allison dealer pick up a 5 gal. container of transynd for the change. Will leave enough for a few later filter changes and few quarts to spare in case you want to put it in the transfer case.
I think what he meant by "idle" was to just let it sit to drain overnight.
dmaxthad 10-14-2007, 12:20 PM I agree on the "idle" thing. Ill check out that "hoot" method. By any chance do you know how to find out where the nearest allison dealer is where i live (kentucky)
mwswarrior 10-14-2007, 01:06 PM Check the Allison website. They have tool to search for the closest shop.

Update:
The Fram-that-Leaks is a HD Fram--#PH 3519A. I do
not know what is HD about it, but I do know that the
Fram Gasket is NFG. The NAPA/Wix filter that Allison
removed was the Allison 1000 spin-on--the "Shorty".
Which brings up a point: Can the Owners of the Late
Model Allisons pick up a bit more filter media and
filter ability by going to an old-school AT-500 Series
filter element?? If ground clearance is not an issue?
The filter is about twice as long.
OE GM # 25011122
NAPA/Gold Wix # FIL 1268 (cost $6-something).
