We have heard about how many people have had injector problems. I was wondering what percent of vechiles actually experience this problem? anybody know?

There is no answer to this question because mileage varies widely on the trucks in use. Many low mileage trucks have had no problems, but will experience failures down the road. Many, if not most, trucks with 80K or more miles have had failures and some have had multiple failures. I'm sure GM has statistics on failures but they aren't likely to share them with us. My guess, based on postings on this and other GM diesel forums are that upward of 80% of the LB7 engines will have injector failures before they reach 100,000 miles.

60K and no problems so far. I have had the truck since it was new now over four years. Replaced the left rear wheel seal and several fuel sending units under warranty. Batteries last year. So far been an awesome truck..My $.02. Jim:ro)

LOL....don't worry about it....this is going to be a REAL short thread.

Sorry sparky I can't resist.

On a more serious note it would be interesting to hear what your towing and how often you tow or if she's a trailer queen. Just curious.

I'm more worried about them going bad after the warrenty expires. It's obvious that mine will crap out eventually, just hope they do it before May '09. 71k down and about 10k a year since I bought it (Feb. '07).

I have spoke with a bunch of farmers around here and they have 200K + on thier trucks and no injector issues, but I have shown them the holes in thier transfer cases!

Mine were swapped out at 32K, and I have 179K on it now:) , so I guess the panhandle of Florida has better fuel and injectors than the rest of America!

Especially where Hindle AZ live...........sorry hindle couldn't resist!;)

59,000 so far, and no problems with my 2003 LB7, but I did put a Nictane fuel filter system on it as soon as I bought it. Just switched to Biodiesel as well. I am hoping running a Nictane filter system and Biodiesel will keep them happy for a long time. This new ULSD is gonna hurt our LB7 injectors sooner as well if you are not running some lubricity.

76k so far on original injectors. I've been using a Cat filter, a lift pump and Stanadyne Performance Formula since about 18k. I pull a 14k trailer 80% of the time, including a trip to Alaska.

87K and original injectors, had to grease the steering column twice, otherwise trouble free, zilch, nada. I have about 15K of those miles towing my travel trailer/car trailer.

60,000 on original injectors. Only repair to truck so far the rear u-joint. The steering column has not even had a problem. There are literally thousands of these trucks in our area most of which have had no injector problems.

I have 85,000 miles on my 2004 diesel LB7 and began to get Check Engine Lights, exhaust smoke, and a real strong exhaust smell. Took it in yesterday and they are going to replace all 8 injectors. They also found fuel in the engine oil.

The warranty will cover this work which the service writer said would normally cost about $8000 which includes 13 hours of labor. He also told me that GM doesn't allow its dealers to stock injectors and they must be ordered. This means my truck will be in the shop for 1 to 2 weeks. But they gave me a loaner at their expense.

Almost 80k with no injector change. I would say that it has pulled trailers for 75% of those miles. Never ran a fuel additive until the ULSD came out, fuel filter normally changed at 15-20k miles too (don't know why they last that long, they just keep going).

Just turned 186K on the original injectors and no problems yet! To make sure, I ran the maintenance records on it at where I used to work and also talked to the original owner and he said he never had them replaced either.

I just bought 2001 GMC Duramax LB7 2500HD and it's got 121,000 and first week of driving had a small fuel leak from crankcase had it checked and they hooked it up no leaks so i went ahead changed the fuel filter because it was going bad plus to avoid a $97 dollar charge to check the leak. took it to phoenix (100miles) massive fuel leak took it in and thank god GMC upped the warranty to 200,000 miles because of this very problem got it fixed cause i was told is about a $3000.00 job. so keep your eye out. not to mention this is also my FIRST diesel but love that duramax power!!!

All 8 injectors replaced at 86,000 miles. Dealer service writer originally told me that this was an $8,000 job. I got the invoice today and it cost $3,088 -- $2,371 for parts and $717 for labor. It was all covered by warranty and the dealer paid $504 for a rental car since my truck was in the shop for almost 2 weeks. RK Chevrolet in Virginia Beach, VA. I have never had a more pleasant experience at an automobile dealership.

P.S.

A little over half of the 86,000 miles was towing a 12,000 lb. RV trailer. I wonder how much that had to do with the short lifespan of my injectors.

Bad smell, smoke, and running poorly at about 48k. Took it to the dealer, and they tried replacing just one injector. Needless to say, not only didn't it work, but it flooded the cylinder with liquid diesel, and hydrauliced on me. Dealer then had to take it back and remove the head and replace two bent valves.

After 3 weeks, the dealer finally replaced all 8 injectors, after learning a hard lesson to read the TSBs BEFORE beginning repairs, and all GM had at the time were rebuilt ones. We knew they would be going out again, and the truck never seemed to run quite right since then. Had a rattle/clatter sound that wasn't there before. I put in a Nicktane filter and started using Stanadyne then.

So, at about 70k, they went out again, took it to another dealer, for obvious reasons. They put in brand new 2nd generation injectors, and the truck runs just like it did when new. Smooth and quiet as it should be. Pulls great, and they expect the newer injectors to last this time.

Dirty ULSD in California wreaks havoc on these fuel systems at 23k psi. But don't feel left out. ULSD is coming to your state soon, if it hasn't already....

100K on my original injectors on my '04 w/ the LB7. I bought it back in May w/ 93K on it. had a VIN check done here and confirmed no injector work.

My parents have a '02 that they brought new. has 75K on it, original injectors also. Most of their miles are from pulling a 24ft travel trailer and 28ft 5er out west and down south while on vacation.

I'd be willing to bet that only GM has accurate statistics on this, such as trucks sold vs truck serviced under the TSb for the injectors. I'd be even more willing to bet that they wont tell us, no matter how nicely we ask.

All the injectors are the same. No second generation. Only new and rebuilt at this point. They are in the process of testing new design now.

Im sure everyone will have something to add to this one, but injector life can be GREATLY improved by fuel filter replacement. My best friend has a Duramax with 471k miles, not KM, on his original squirters. EVERYTHING is original on the truck w/ exception of alternators, etc, but has never done anything except change fuel filters and oil every 5k. I know 5k seems very low, but he is running prefilter and Raycor on the main filiter. Again, Im sure everyone is rolling their eyes, but these are diesel engines. They run off oil, and a very dirty natured beasts! These injectors will fail in a heartbeat if they get dirt or trash in the intake of them. Once that ball bearing in the injector starts to beat trash around, it makes the bearing smaller and you get over fueling, etc.
