 Eric can that grase in the steedring shaft grease kit be identified by part no/type and vendor so we don't have to buy a second kit if more grease is needed. The chassis grease Schaeffer sells looks interesting. I use a grease with a tar like consistency to lube the pistons in my Springer type air rifles and it might work but its expensive and not readily available.

Bill, I used axle bearing grease. Very thick and it worked great. I personally do not think you need to purchase the kit, you can do it yourself either way you like. I just would like the fact that I saved $20 bucks and did it with stuff I already had..

What I am thinking is if the original grease was an exotic base, the two greases may not be compatable and cause premature breakdown of the grease. Sometime manufactures use a "special" grease in user unacessable or difficult to maintain places. Their properties make them last longer, stick better or not separate (weep) as much when worked.
An example is non soap based greases such as Bentone and Polyurea greases should not be mixed with soap based greases such as lithium and calcium.

I would not hesitate from trying an off the shelf grease, it will be a bit more labor intesive as the kit includes a stopper to keep the grease in the shaft while compressing it. I think the 274 Schaeffers would work very well in that application

I'm using Schaeffer's 238 Moly Supreme for Chassis Lube, thought it was best for use in the ball joints. Its a synthetic blend like the 274.I've used 274 and I think the 238 is little more solid and stickier.

I'm going to try and pick up a used grease kit from the dealer and Ill use Schaefer's 238 MOLY Supreme. Its thick, real tacky and is ated for extreme pressure, high tempature and supposedly won't pound out. I use it for chassis lube and itys super for the ball joints.

JohnnyO, I did not clean the other grease out of the shaft. I just keep pushing grease out till it was all clean looking and had plenty of grease on the shaft. No problems as of yet..
