: New to diesels, need help!!!!!
94GM65D 11-27-2004, 07:49 PM Hi guys. I need help.
11/24 I started my truck...94 GM 6.5 TD, all stock...idled for 20 minutes, died, started right back up, drove about a half a block, died and remains dead.
Replaced fuel filter and OPS. It seems to be getting fuel good at the filter, IP. injectors. I checked fuses, all are good. Did some electrical testing and everything is getting power.
Is it possible that the ECM is fried or something else??
This is the first diesel I have ever owned and I love the truck, just don't know much about them.
Also, the fuel pump runs after switching the key off which I believe is normal but it seems to run longer than usual since all this is happened.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lee
Thought I would add, also tried ether which did not work.
Texas Diesel Guy 11-27-2004, 08:34 PM Lift pump running after key off is a good sign, it should run as long as you have oil pressure, which takes just a second to fall when you shut the engine off, no problems there.
Since you do hear the supply pump running after shut-off, and have confirmed that it is pumping fuel to the Injection Pump, that leaves only the IP in question. Sounds like your experience the oh so common problem these trucks face, PMD failure.
Verify that fuel supply has good pressure and no aeration is present, to do this, simply fit a rubber hose over the filter bleed on top, open the bleed slighty and allow fuel to pump into a container where it can be ovserved for air bubbles.
Next, need to hook a diagnostic scan tool up to it and see if there are any codes tripped. I'm about 90% sure, sitting where I am, that you have a bad PMD though.
quantum mechanic 11-27-2004, 09:56 PM The good thing about '94 OBDI diagnostics, you just jump pin A to B on the ALDL with the key on and the check engine light will flash out the codes. post them here and we'll look them up.

I wish I could however, while messing with the truck the other night, I was afraid the fuel pump wasn't going to shut off (it ran for a good 30-45 seconds before I disconnected) so I had to disconnect the neg. battery cable which, of course, clears out any computer codes.
It never flashed any codes before it quit on me. I was thinking if I could get it to run for even a couple of minutes, if it had any problems it would maybe light up the SES light, but all it does is crank over.
I really appreciate you guys responding to my post since I'm a bit "diesel stupid"!!!!!
Thanks,
Lee
quantum mechanic 11-27-2004, 10:21 PM When you crank it do you see white smoke or any smoke from the tailpipe? It's always a good idea to have a spare fuel solenoid driver, you could plug it in and if it started, problem sloved.
Turbine Doc 11-29-2004, 07:38 PM A little more to the just plug it in principle, PMD is mounted on side of IP held in place by 4 of the most God awful to get at torx head screws, when you get it off check tighness of the transistor screw stud lock nuts under the black plastic caps (throw awy when removed), I brought mine back from the dead 3xs this way eventually I wound up with a Bill Heath FSD kit. (becomes a FSD when removed from the pump) look for a post points to ponder by me for more info on the topic, spend some time in the FAQ links also, lot of good info there.
