Just wanted to introduce myself- Ill be on here alot. Im in the middle of lemon lawing my 04 F350 dually. I wanted to build a custom tow rig using a duramax chassis and a 71 panel suburban. We were cruising around the goodguys show in pleasanton and my wife fell in love with the late 40's cab over engine chevys. So I found a 48 and i think it needs a duramax and allison powertrain. So here I am knowing nothing about the prlatform and I was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction.
Obviously If I could use the entire chassis plumbed with the suspension and all that would be the easiest route- but for some reason im sure it wont be that easy. First things first- What generation duramax would you use and why. Cost is a concern but not as much as functionality and reliability- Im thinking maybe find a dually chassis thats been in a rollover. What should I be looking for? thanks

forgot to mention- that right now it sits on a 74 1 ton tow truck frame (dually) with a 454 and t400

Those goodguys shows are dangerous just for this reason - too damn many really cool ideas!! LOL
You've got quite a project ahead of you and I hope you keep us updated with pics as it progresses. Your rig will certainly turn heads.

:Whoa: Would a Kodiak frame and drive train be better suited for this project??

Pick up a recent copy of Diesel World magazine. The October issue has installment #3 of a custom double-cab COE on a GM HD chassis project. They are using a 2002 LB7 powertrain and an HD chassis from a roll-over.
I would think that an 06+ LLY/LBZ powertrain would be the way to go if you could get a complete rolling chassis for reasonable $s....

ok things were slow for a while and now they have taken off- I ended up with two cab overs- one chevy- one gmc- was thinking about making a crew cab- Im gonna stick with a stock cab and a duramax drivetrain for now- Im in the market for a wrecked duramax- Ill work with whatever I can find. Ive never worked on a newer truck or done a drivetrain transplant. what kinda of electronics do i need to pull out of the cab to make it run?
heres some shots- Im gonna keep the camo'd cab.

Your best bet on the electronics would be to use the wiring harness that goes with the engine you're using. You'll definitely need a wiring diagram for the donor truck.

"Part 4: The Turbo" is in the December issue. I have parts 3 and 4. If you don't get anything from the publisher, let me know and I'll see if I can figure out my scanner....
