hey guys...well my truck has been takin forever to start lately. i took it into the local shop and they shotgunned some parts on it and did nothing to help it...so i got pissed and am off to fix it myself...i sit there and crank for 15-30 seconds before it fires...thats not normal...priming it does not really help...so i was getting curious and sprayed a little either and it fired up instantly but thats not good on them...so i am assuming i have an air leak somewhere but i don't know where to go...i replaced filter a week ago...and it was doin it prior to that so thats not the problem...it starts like it does when u run it out of fuel....minus the primin help just turns over turns over and then it finally comes to life....when it runs it runs better then it has in along time...but...i don't knw y it doesn't start right pleas help

i've had and still have that same problem. dealre told me injectors. they replaced all eight, even though i had zero injector symptoms, and it still does it, but now instead of every morning, only intermittently. prob once a week. the truck has never lost prime and rail pressure is good. no surging or anything. once its running it runs like it was brand new. i'm still looking for answers too.

How many miles are on your truck? Although i hate to compare it to a ford, the problem does seem alot the same. Glow plugs (or glow plug relay) would be my initial guess as well. Looking at the gp break down, there is a conductor that runs from plug to plug along each side of the block, id check that as well.

Hard start/no start is one of the symptons of bad injectors. Your injectors are covered for 7yr/200k miles (injector special policy). Take it to the dealer for a free set of injectors. But take the edge off first...

X2 on the injectors. If it was an air leak, priming would solve it. Try changing your fuel filter and see if it improves for a day or two.

And stay away from the ether!

they need to check return rates not balance rates.I had one in not long ago would not start at all and priming it didnt work on his either. customer had been starting it with ether for god knows how long(but in his defense it was some kind of special ether with lubricity for diesels) any how it only had one bad injector that didnt show up on balance rates only return test. it is long test and if it passes the dealer may want to charge you for it. but the fuel line prssure was low enough to not start but would run (kinda crappy but would be able to drive it) once it did get going. it also had injectors done 60K before I did another set on it. as far as glow plug problem I dont think its cold enough yet to ntice a problem there.

I would have them do a fuel rail pressure test first. It can be done with a techII and if it passes wouldn't cost as much as a return test.

true. and an even better test w/tech 2 would be to ramp up fuel pressure and see if it can achieve and match desired pressure. actual and desired should stay very close.

I'd let another dealership have their hand in it by now. Iowa LLY is in the area, give him a hollar and ask where he takes his stuff too.

To update, he said that he took it to another dealership and they diagnosed it as injectors. R&R'd the injectors and all is now well.
