Examining my oil pan, particulary the part towards the front of the truck, I noticed alot of rust/rot bubbles. I was wondering if anyone has had a horror story where these rot through commonly, such as the Fords do.

Well, 40 people viewed this, and nobody replied, so I am going to use the lack of an answer, as my answer, that the 6.5 oil pan is strong/thick and doesn't rot through commonly.

I can't imagine it would be any more likely to rust through than any other when exposed to the right elements for long enough. Mine's only seen salt one winter, so it's clean. The pan on my GP is rusted badly, though, as it's spent it's life in Ohio.

To answer your question, I don't think it's a "known problem"

No rust on my oil pan but I did have a Ford Taurus that had the pan rust out.

I have 3-4 oil pans in the shop from 6.2's built in the early 90's up to 92. They all have the rust bubbles, but none are so bad that they have come close to rusting through. It does look bad, though

Hey Matt, My 6.5 is spotless, & I also salt with my truck & I usually wipe the oil pan down with the spilt oil after changes, So I don't think it was a part that has a flaw from the manufacter?

Differential housing cover looked awful on mine .Had that ford look -thick scale rust.Scraped it down to see how bad or good .Looks fine after cleaning up & seems to have lots of good metal. Havent noticed any thing negative re the oil pan.

Had a power steering pump reservoir rust through once but never an oil pan.
