deadsquirrel 09-25-2007, 12:53 PM i unplugged my turbo vane controller on my lly and love the way it sounds idleing. then i drove it just to see what it was like and it was such a pig (i kept an eye on my egt's). i was just wondering if anybody else has done this and if anybody had any ideas to make the truck sound like this idleing besides efi live or the turbo brake??
huthuthut 09-25-2007, 01:34 PM I see you know about efi live. Thats the only way to do it... you need to adjust it only at idle... those vanes are there for a reason - to make it work well!
deadsquirrel 09-25-2007, 03:01 PM yea i fugured its just that efi live is just too in depth for me. im sure if i had it i would figure it out and everything its just that i dont want to do that. knowing me i would tune something wrong and end up blowing my motor! i just dont think it's for me
huthuthut 09-25-2007, 05:19 PM Look into have a custom tune done for you by one of the guys here who do EFI Live tunes onto PCMs and then ship them out to you. That way, you could request it be turned off at idle, and have the benefits of efi live power!
deadsquirrel 09-25-2007, 06:01 PM hmmmmm good idea that way i wouldnt have to mess around with tuning my own stuff. could i have them put on a very mild tune (close to stock) and still run my banks 6 gun?
z79outlaw 09-25-2007, 07:19 PM You could throw away your banks six gun. Have one of them build you a Tune with a DSP 2 or 5 and you could get either 2 switchable tunes or 5. Then get whatever tunes you wanted. You could even have them build you a race tune or somthing for the future, and then have your mild tune, and whatever other 3 tunes you wanted. You would just have to wire up the switch. It'd be 100 times better than the banks.
deadsquirrel 09-25-2007, 08:19 PM yea i am not a huge fan of the banks but it did come on my truck and i would have to buy gauges and everything to replace the pda gauges. sounds like a lot of work but do you think that i would be better off just buying efi live or having someone else program it? basically how involed is it?
z79outlaw 09-25-2007, 08:34 PM I would tell you this, buy EFI live even though you are afraid you may screw up your motor and have no intentions of doing your own tuning. You may change your mind when you get bitten by the bug. Have someone else reputable adjust the vanes at idle on your turbo so you get the sound you want. Then as you go on, you may do your own research and wanna learn a little about EFI live you have that option. It's $749 dollars its alot more than just a tuner. You could even get some free starter tunes depending on who you buy it from. You have a huge resource here that can help you learn if you want. You are not limited with EFI live as you are with banks. You can learn at your own pace when your comfortable to do so.
Or I would say check your local boards, see if anyone is will to tune your truck. You buy the licsense $100 and then throw in a case of beer or somthing and have them adjust your vanes.
It just really depends on what your future plans are with your truck. If your satisfied with banks and dont wanna find what else is out there then the latter route maybe your best choice. If you think someday you wanna go and make the most of your truck EFI Live is your best choice and It stays with you and not the truck, also works with a wide range of GM vehicles.
fire0021 09-25-2007, 08:38 PM imo i would get it when i started i knew absolutley nothing programing and learna littl more every day if you buy it from someone like nick at duramaxtuner.com he will give you a couple tunes to get you started and then that way you have good tunes that will give you what you want then as you learn you can make changes of your own and learn a little at a time as there is alot to learn also you are able to datalog your truck witch is another great tool
deadsquirrel 09-25-2007, 08:48 PM so what exactly does EFI live come with? and would you have to carry a laptop around with you to tune it like a programmer?
z79outlaw 09-25-2007, 08:55 PM No, once you flash your ecm your laptop no longer needs to come with you. Unless you choose to log driving or somthing like that. I would say give one of the vendors that sell efi live a call tommorow. They can give you all the details and answer everyone of your question. Or check out the EFI live section of this website.
deadsquirrel 09-25-2007, 08:58 PM yea it seems that everyone who has EFI live loves it so with that kind of customer fanbase how could i go wrong right??? but thanks guys for all of your input and in the meantime if anybody knows anybody who wants a 6 gun with pda you know where to find it! thanks again
MarkBroviak 09-25-2007, 10:43 PM Mr. Deadsquirrel, I will go one better. I can
a. sell you the whole setup and dyno tune your truck for you
b. you can come and I can put either a 2 or five postion switch in and you would have multiple tunes to choose from
choose b is the cheaper one and would probably make you the happiest and you are close enough to me that if you would like to make any changes than it wouldn't be to big of a deal. I promiss you will love it when I am done and if you would like alot more of that sound i have the fix for that too.

if you are looking at the turbo, the closest plug to you has a quick disconnector that feeds into the intercooler pipe (it right on top of the turbo and it is NOT the one with the big white wire, it is in front of that) this is the best way i can discribe it
