I just found antifreeze under my hd, which has 125,000 miles. I have added coolant before but have never seen it under the truck until now. is it time for a water pump? anyone know about replacing pump- cost or diy ?

check this out....

if you got reasonable mechanical skills, a diy aint too hard..... water pump was about $200.... clutch fan tool is about 65..... coolant was about 30....

it is labor intensive..... you have to pull the ballancer to get to the last water pump bolt. this requires a 36mm socket (12 point) and a BIG breaker bar. that thing is cranked on to +/- 280lb ft. you will have to lock the flywheel..... thats explained in the link..... good luck...

:) thanks, there is some good info ! I checked later today and it appears that no more had leaked . Is this something that will graduall get worse ? I have been told that when these water pumps go out that is not like older models , where it comes apart and goes into radiator. I do not notice any type of noise from pump.

mine leaked a puddle about 2-3 inches for a week or so.... then one day it drained a puddle out about 18" dia. i loosened the surge tank cap to keep cooling system from pressurizing and forcing coolant out weephole. did this till i had an open saturday to fix it. some guys say they've run with surge tank cap loose for weeks and had no overheat or drips. the pump made no noise to indicate it was failing, just started drippin one day... however it is different than water pumps that you're used to... this one is gear driven. like i said, not hard to fix, just kinda labor intensive. i had to have someone help me when it came to pullin the balancer; need them to lock the TC so the crank wouldnt spin when loosening the balancer bolt. im 285lbs an i had to get on it hard to break it loose... that thing is a bear.
clutch fan tool is a must for me... no way to lock pulley from spinning when loosening the fan bolt....

hope this helps.... wt
