: Amzoil Bypass filtration question/problem
14wntr 09-22-2007, 11:56 PM Has anyone experienced a whine noise coming out of the spin on oilfilter adapter after you install this system on a duramax? I can hear the pump or something in front of my feet and can feel it when I go under the truck and grab on to the lines coming out of the engine. I really hope this isnt going to be an issue. It is very noisy. I thought it was because the dual filter housing was touching the floor of the truck so I isolated away from the body using rubber washers on all mounting points. It wasnt that, so I got underneath and could hear it coming out or around where the original filter went.
DenverDMax 10-08-2007, 05:27 PM I just installed an Amsoil bypass filter last night and mine is vabrating as well.It was the first thing I noticed. Ive seen some vibration dampening isolator kits for some unrelated vehicles for remote bypass oil filter kits. So Im assuming its a normal thing but it would be nice to hear from some other folks. I can just grab either filter on mine and its obvious there is a vibration in them.
PonyKiller87 10-08-2007, 06:02 PM Double check your oil lines, Ive heard of this a car forum and it turned out the guy had the lines on wrong and some internal valve was doing wierd stuff making it vibrate.
14wntr 10-08-2007, 07:12 PM I have double checked everything and it is on right. Since initally writing this I have become an Amsoil dealer and am now working with the tech department to hopefully come up with a solution to this noise. I am having a bracket made and see if that works. I refuse to let this get the best of me!!! :D
JD Diesel 10-08-2007, 08:45 PM I have had mine on for 2 1/2 years and never heard this on mine. Or any other truck that I have used the dual remote.. JD:D
Dieselhealer 10-08-2007, 10:10 PM Does the return line on this system dump into the oil fill tube via a line to the cap?
If so, you need to pull the cap with the engine idling and see if the oil is foamy coming from the return filter as it's going in the fill tube, and if it is, you better disconnect the bypass system till you find out what's happening. You don't want a crankcase full of aerated oil.
14wntr 10-08-2007, 11:04 PM The BMK-17 that makes the noise goes back into the oil filter adapter at the block.
DenverDMax 10-09-2007, 04:35 AM Yep. Mines got the spin on adaptor as well. I also double checked the hoses. I don't seem to hear it constantly either.
14wntr 10-09-2007, 07:25 AM No it seems to stop at higher speeds and sometimes is not there when I first start it. Believe me, I am dilegently working on it. It drives me nuts and I will gladly post the solution on this thread if I ever figure it out. I spoke with the tech department and they suggested inuslating the lines with the foam stuff you buy for your hot water pipes....that didnt change a thing. I isolated the unit with rubber as listed above and no change. I bought a new mounting plate (since my first one is welded) and am going to mount it to the frame with the bracket I am having made. If that doesnt work I will go in new directions.
Barkbuster 10-09-2007, 01:00 PM Mine is silent and effective :)
DenverDMax 10-09-2007, 01:01 PM Same here. I don't hear it when I first start mine either.
I think that what you are feeling is a resonant frequency from the oil pump, and what ever you have your filter set mounted to is allowing that resonance to propogate into the vehicle chassis. Minor changes in where/how you have the filter head mounted should affect the noise.
I had the same problem you are having with my system which I had originally made a bracket for to mount from 3 studs in the floor of the truck where an unneeded heat shield was (I am guessing it is a cat heat shield for a gas truck).
I have since made a new bracket which welded to the frame and the noise is no longer noticeable from inside or under the truck.
You can also run into resonance problems with specific length of hose given a certain frequency. The frequency of the hose and the frequency of the pump pulses can match one another. There are actually softwares used by engineers to predict such things when designing hydraulic equipment. If you are confident that you mounting is not causing the problem you may want to try changing your hose lengths.

Sean
14wntr 10-15-2007, 02:21 PM Thanks Sean, I really appreciate it! I am hoping to have it resolved soon with a bracket change and then its on to hose lengths. Currently they are under 12"
chrisp54 11-03-2007, 10:40 AM I, too have the same problem with the bypass installation. I am curious as to your solution. Did you resolve the noise?
14wntr 11-03-2007, 11:52 AM I have fasioned a metal bracket which attaches to the frame in the same location under the drivers floor and I can very happily say that the problem is GONE!! OH yeah!!:D
The key is definetly to get the thing off the sheet metal of the floor. If anyone needs them, I will post some pictures as soon as I can of the bracket. I had to drill one 1/4" hole in the frame rail and I used two existing holes.

could not resist
14wntr 11-03-2007, 09:25 PM Im workin on it...RELAX!!
14wntr 11-04-2007, 12:31 PM Hopefully the pics show enough. I mounted it to the drivers side frame rail just behind the original filter location. It is no longer touching the floor sheet metal and it has stopped the noise transfer.
PS. For those of you with welding skills, please dont look too closely at my work...it is my first time welding. :o:
14wntr, thank you for all your time and effort to figure out and eliminate the noise. It is just in time for me because I now have about 2000 miles on my new Dmax and haven't used any oil, so it looks like the rings are doing their job.
Don't worry about how your welding looks. We must have had the same teacher. I'll use a little 1/4" paint and no one will be able to tell the difference. You know what they say, "dark night, fast bicycle...looks good!" :)

Firefighter Rob 11-04-2007, 08:50 PM I made a bracket for mine thats very similar to 14wntr's. I never had any noise problems, always had it mounted to the frame and with the bracket the filters are high enough so there above the bottom of the frame. Anyone have problems with lower oil pressure? I think I read on here somewhere the filters were causing lower oil pressure.
wing'n'it 11-04-2007, 10:12 PM Glad to hear the mount was the issue. I installed mine back in March and haven't had any noise at all, though the bracket I bought from another AMSOIL Dealer, attaches to the frame.
I've noticed slightly lower oil pressure, but not anywhere close to being a problem. Idle, about a needle width below 30psi , and cruising just under 60psi (warm).
14wntr 11-06-2007, 06:52 PM Mine runs exactly the same range as yours.
