: Finished first oil change

Well it wasn't really my first oil change ever, but was my first DIY on my truck. Everything went pretty well old oil filter was on tight as hell but came off eventually and the oil drain plug was going to kill me getting it off. But it did come off eventually

The oil that came out was so incredibly black being my first diesel that was pretty damn surprising. And i refilled it with Rotella T this time around since i bought a 20 Ltr pail of it and was way past the sheduled oil change time so i plan on doing another oil change in maybe 6-7000 km's.

Question how do i go about reseting the change oil message on my dash?
and how tight should everything go back on? I tighted the oil filter down with the filter wrench but didn't go completely crazy on it and the drain plug i tightened down pretty hard since i don't have a torque wrench.

your story is just like mine,my first diesel man was the oil filter tight! to reset the oil change just put the key on the "on" position the hit the gas peddle fast 3-4 times that will reset it. just hand tight the oil filter.

Hmm well i put the filter on a little more than hand tight. Should that bring any problems later on?

Plus when i was trying to break loose the drain plug in the pan i smashed my hand really hard against my bush guard and its still hurting like hell today.

Don't worry about that. Some hands are tighter than others.

i put on the oil/fuel and tranny filter hand tight. don't worry about it leaking, i've never had a problem.

Good to know. Thanks for the info really makes this DIY stuff easier. although in all honesty it really was just an oil change.

just an oil change, yeah. but it's a bit scary the first time.

wait till you change your fuel filter, it's about as easy but a step harder IMO

then you got to drain and refill both diff's, probably flush and fill the transmission, ect

you're going to have fun :D

I really can't wait. As long as some of this other stuff isn't on so damn tight. Might actually look into changing the fuel filter and exterior tranny filter as soon as i have time to buy the filters during the week.

Damn work and making me travel all the time!

Well it is definately not my trucks first change but it was my first change personally on the truck. I have tomorrow off so i am going to hunt down a tranny filter. Although pre-filling the filter could be a little difficult since i have no idea what type of oil is in the tranny.

Unknown 303, you will probably be alright with DEX III, or DEX VI, I would think. Glad your oil change worked out. I'm in the same boat as you, have to do my fuel filter pretty soon, and after that I plan on doing the front/rear diffs, transfer case, and an oil change. I'm a little nervous, it's always been dealer serviced before this.

Yeah i used Shell DEX III. Looked like the same color/consistancy. SO that went well tranny filter was a breeze to replace. And the fuel filter thanks to my DEACO valve was relatively easy to get out, just a little difficult fitting my gorilla mitts in there to twist that bastard on. Primed perfectly and fired up and has been running fine since. Starting to get used to this DIY stuff, if only i had a garage i could be doing so much more.

I know the feeling, all I have is a cracked cement driveway and some cardboard.

I was out on the street with a garbage bag layed flat with clumps of dirt off my transmission to hold it in place while i unscrewed the filter. Seemed to work so i can't complain.
