What about a predator programmer. You can read codes, check balance rates as well as increase power, change tire size, remove top end speed limter etc. It is about $400 or so. You can also buy a generic scanner that is OBD2 compatible for less.

Spend the extra money and get the Predator. I just got a chance to load mine today(stacked with Edge/Attitude). All I can say is what a difference, even with the Edge on 0. Much more responsive from takeoff. Only small dislikes are the tire size calibrator seems a little off and some injector noise, not much still very tolerable. You have so many more options with this over just a scanner, unless of course you don't need these features.

I got an OBDII scanner for like $120, but if you are planning on putting a box on it, you might as well get the predator and get the best of both.

I have the edge as well.. so just get a code scanner..I found mine at Sears for $120 and I have used it on tons of cars and trucks..paid for itself many times over.
