: Why No Pyro From Factory?
towin43 11-23-2004, 04:59 PM Been doing a lot of reading on here about EGT's. Why is this critical parameter not allowed to be monitored by the consumer with a factory equipped pyrometer? What's to keep the average Joe from melting down his new LLY if he doesn't know enough to install a pyro and back down when things get toasty?
baimpala 11-24-2004, 10:30 AM I think the power the truck has will keep it from melting down. I figure GM went to great lengths to figure out what the average user would do with their truck, and set power to a reasonable level so that 99% wouldn't blow something up by staying within their towing limits, etc. . . What you don't know won't hurt you. . .

DavesDmax 11-24-2004, 12:10 PM It took them a while to add the Transmission temp gauge. And, it's only available for the Allison.
Dennis is correct. Most people that buy vehicles really don't understand what their gauges are telling them anyway.
Let's face it, they don't call them "idiot lights" for no reason.
For 95-99% of the people buying vehicles with gauge packages, it's just a cool factor.
Here's a good example, What is the normal combination of EGT to Boost to RPM for a Duramax truck unloaded verses loaded?
Most people that own these things, (most board members here excluded), don't even know that there is a normal combination, much less what to do or look at when faced with an improper combination.
Ya know Dennis, sometimes it's a curse being a Nuc.
baimpala 11-24-2004, 02:59 PM Yeah, I have my wife take logs on the truck every 15 minutes. . . ):h
baimpala 11-24-2004, 03:00 PM I initial them every hour to show that I have reviewed them for trends. . . ):h
DavesDmax 11-24-2004, 03:44 PM You know, That's only funny to Nuc's and some squids. ):h
coyotekid 11-24-2004, 04:38 PM Actually, the tranny temp gauge is available on more than just the Allison. For example, you can get it with the 4L80E tranny as well.
_nar_ 11-24-2004, 06:27 PM You can get it on any HD truck, the 6.0s I have been in had it too. I also saw on another forum that if you put a denali or escalade cluster in a 1/2 ton the trans temp gauge will work then, because the stuff is there to run it, just you don't get to see it.
baimpala 11-25-2004, 09:09 AM Who's joking? . . . ):h ):h ):h ):h

akdiesel 11-26-2004, 01:34 AM This may be the very next item that GM installs on their '06 or '07 models.
I have read posts from people stating that they no addtions or use the additions on a 1 or 2 setting and climbing hills with heavy loads and are getting high EGT's. I believe there is more concern of the high EGT's on a stock truck than high temps on a stock Allison. I have never heard of any one over heating an Allison while climbing a hill with a heavy load.
They may have to remove somthing like a fuel gauge or oil pressure. Those don't work half the time from what I hear.
dmaxalliTech 11-26-2004, 10:43 PM a stock truck will not have high EGT issues.. Unless somebody else can prove me wrong I dont think its needed stock.. I never seen over 1000 degree's on mine when stock
bob camire 12-23-2004, 05:48 PM We love gauges...cockpit looks like a jet..I vote to add the pyro gauge....what will be next? Wouldnt it be nice to automatically pressurize the tires for loading towing and then be able to depressurize them for cruising??later, bc

The highest i have seen stock pulling is 1400F Eric.
That is with a stock airfilter and a Banks 4" Exhaust.
Kootenay Mountain Pass and 19,750 GCVWR
So i gotta call shullbit on that one. I had to slow down to 3rd gear to keep egt's in check.
Horse Trainer 12-23-2004, 06:49 PM Also beg to differ on the stock EGT. I saw over 1400 pulling out of Camp Verde, Arizona towards Phoenix - pull is 9 miles, so I had to really back it down. I was probably near the max GCW for the combination. I wonder how many people bust 1400 for long lengths of time without knowing. High altitudes seem to really drop the boost and run up the EGT. At lower altitudes, I had a hard time breaking 1000.
