: Question for All Pre-OEM Fuel Filter Folks
Nomad One 11-23-2004, 03:10 PM I'd appriciate some input from those folks
who have installed 2 micron pre-OEM
filters (Racor, CAT, Baldwin, etc.)
Service manual calls for the OEM replacement at
15,000 miles. With my added filtration, I'm hoping
to move that number up to 30,000 mile (or more)
intervals. ):h
Can I get a poll from those who have
added primary filtration before the OEM:
When are you now replacing your OEM fuel filter?

Diesel Power 11-23-2004, 03:22 PM Hi,
one thing you have to consider is additive. if you plan on running a good emulsifier, then you can probably go longer on your OEM filter. 40k shouldn't be a big deal. i've seen 2 trucks running cat pre-oem's run 40k. the one that ran additive had a nice clean oem filter, about 1/2 black. the other that didnt run additive looked the same, but it had a fair amount of rust in the filter. that is what i woudl be concerned about. i've heard (not seen) of a couple OEM filters rusting through when people don't change them. so if you run additive i wouldn't worry too much about it. if you don't i would definately stick with the OEM interval. then there is also something to be said for following the OEM spec for warranty purposes;).
that being said i run additive and run over 20k on my OEM filter.. last one of mine i cut open with 20k on it had about 10% of the bottom black.. the rest was white.. however i run additive religiously every tank..
Duramax Dually 11-23-2004, 08:40 PM Well I am probably overkill but I always change my filters at 10K miles. All of them. I change OEM Fuel, Oil, Allison. Keeps it simple. I change the oil at 10K. I run synthetic. I find no need to push it when the filters are cheap.
Diesel Power: Whats your recommendation on your Nicktane kit? I have your set up. I changed that at 5K miles right after I installed the TFI 60 gallon deal.
Roegs 11-23-2004, 10:19 PM I have Greg's Racor Pre OEM kit installed, and am very happy. I still plan to change the OEM filter at 7-10k miles. If we start running the new 2 stage OEM filter, I'll probably change at 7k intervals (I only put 8k per year on my truck). I'm not sure how long I'll go on the 660 filter.
Aggie91 11-23-2004, 10:48 PM I have the nicktane set up w/the CAT 2um filter. I always run FPPF total power & cetane boost & that has worked well for me. The last OEM filter I changed had 30K on it & I think I will go to 40K on this one. (As long as I am SURE I have VERY GOOD fuel!!)
Here are the pix of the OEM filter:

My suggestion on the Pre-OEM Racor filter (R60S - 2 micron which is what I have been using for a year and a half) is as follows: After 7500 miles, change the filter for the first time and dissect the R60S. If will probably be over half used. If this is the case, then you can probably go to 10K miles. Anything over this and you are pushing it. Dissect the first couple of filters to get a feel for how things are working out.
Also, you will not need to change the OEM as often. You can easily go to 15K miles with absolutely no problem. I have changed mine out at this interval with the Racor R60S installed Pre-OEM and the OEM Racor does not even look used (as others have mentioned above).
OC_DMAX 11-23-2004, 11:48 PM 56Nomad,
Judging by what I saw on my OEM (have Pre-OEM Racor R60S installed), I would concur with the above posts on stretching OEM change out to 30K miles. At 15K miles, the OEM had just a small 3/4 inch band of use on the bottom of the filter. Very similar to what Aggie91 posted above in his pictures.

after cutting open quite a few filters i tell people 18-20k. i figure if you can go 10k on the 2 micron racor you have to be able to go at least double on the cat given the amount of media. i've got samples of 12k, 15k, 18, 20k, and 22k CAT filters. some i have multiples of and none measured any real difference in restriction (always about 4-4.5 InHg).
Bill Gisse 11-24-2004, 07:48 AM Have mine installed in front of the drivers side rear wheel where Nick recomended. Although this is as a little harder to do than some others, I prefered it because there's no line to cut. Nick's new kit is a lot easier to install. The 2 micron CAT does the job amd if it werem't for GM rules the OEM filter could probaly run 30k plus.
sprintmod1 11-24-2004, 08:20 AM Been running Greg's Racor R60S set up since day two along with Primrose 405 additive and have been changing both filters every 10,000 miles. Figure with all the towing I do and all the fuel that goes through it, that the filter changes would be some cheap insurance. I may be wrong, but I believe that Dmaxallitech's maintenance schedule provides for fuel filter changes every 10,000 also. I am following that maintenance schedule.
BamaFan 11-24-2004, 03:00 PM I run the Racor pre-oem filter setup also. I change both filters at 10,000 mile intervals. It ain't hard, nor expensive. Especially considering the low miles per year I rack up.
Jomar 11-24-2004, 04:32 PM The quality of fuel means a lot more than the miles.

deadfurrow 11-24-2004, 07:09 PM I posted this thread (http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14494&highlight=fuel+filters) a while back concerning fuel filter change intervals. It has a picture of my first three fuel filters with & without my Racor 2 micron filter installed.
If I were you, I'd still change your OEM filter at 10k miles & cut it open to see how it looked, just to be on the safe side. Then adjust your next filter change accordingly.
I'll change my OEM filter at 25k this time.
56Nomad 11-24-2004, 07:49 PM Wow,
I finally got to log in under my original handle. :ro)
My new password was forwarded to one of my filtered
mailboxes. Glad to be back as 56Nomad
Jomar 11-24-2004, 11:05 PM 56Nomad, I know what you mean, thought I`d never get back on. Nick is to be commended on a job well done though.
