I always let mine idle for a 1/2 min or so after dropping it in park. This is to let the turbo cool down. Once my EGT gauge falls below 300°F I kill it. Hot oil can coke up in the turbo since they are not coolant cooled in a 6.5 diesel.

sorry to hijack...but how long does it take your egt to get below 300?

Hey go fast always better to start a new thread rather than to hijack one, really depends on how hard you have been running,

where are you monitoring your EGT pre or post turbo,

Mine post turbo not towing, running 75mph I get to 300 usually by time I cruise to thru the off ramp & park at most rest areas,

Unless towing or running heavy I may just wait for a sustained reduction of EGT 25F or so and continuing the downward trend then shuting down, often it depnds on how urgent the call of nature is :D

bobby, my probe is pre-turbo for reference. If I have been driving lightly and not working the engine hard like going through a residential subdivision, 20-30 sec or so of idling will do once I come to a stop. This usually gets me to about 275-300°F.

Now if i've been driving out on the highway and was working it hard the situation is different. All that metal under the hood is hot! It can take a full minute of idling sometimes to cool her down to 300° in the summer time. Granted I have no ATA intercooler so that may make a difference in cool down time. I imagine TD's cools down a bit quicker with the intercooler.

Mine doeesn't take to much to cool down to about 300°, about 30 seconds to a minute if I just drive in town mainly without a lead foot...

Also do you guys have anything located at the top of your exhaust side of the turbo? At the yellow circle (picture below) looks to me like a pyrometer... There are yellow wires that go into the cab which is why I think that. If you guys need I can get a picture tonight or tomorrow...

Nuthin on mine there, probably a pyro, anything else would melt in that spot.
My rule is always let my turbo idle for at least half a minute, longer if the engine has been working hard. Don't want to give my hard earned money to the guy at the local injection & turbo shop. He has lots of dead turbos out back and says most of em are coked. Thats a mighty clean looking Turbo you've got there. New or just shampooed?

I cut mine at about 350 - 400 *F....I would wait all day long for it to cool to 300*F....
