It would have to be completely insulated from the truck due to the truck's 12 VDC system. The risk for an overvoltage condition would be almost certain on a failure or accident.

It's not impossible, just not too many have tried due to the complexity and cost.

There might be someone that has done that in the rock crawling world. They would be the guys to talk to as far as what would be best.

It could be done. All you need is some solenoids, two extra batteries and wire. Wire it up to run parallel while charging, and isolated in series for operating the winch. If you wire it right, it'll work fine, however there's a better way. If you only have one alt, you could add another one and a 24v battery, basically set up a separate system. this would probably work to best as you can use alt and bat power while using the winch...

Blue...thanks

Do I need a 24v alternator?? Where would you mount the 24v battery? Is it bigger then a normal 12v battery? Would the load (270 amps) be less on 1 24v then (460 amps) 2 12v batteries?

IIRC, there was an article in FOUR WHEELER about them putting in a WARN 24V Winch on their project Super Duty. It can be done. It is a pretty straight forward article. I know you will need a special soliniod and a few big ass batteries. I'll try to find the issue.

When you take everything in to consideration or maybe just when I do adding a 24V alt in the secondary position is the way to go. You could mount the big 24v bat under your cab, left rear. You'd need to build a rack to mount it to the frame there. The big problem with doubling up 12v batts and running the winch with them is you can't charge the batts and use the winch at the same time. I order to use the winch for en extended amount of time, you would need more batteries and most likely another alt to charge them all. In the long run IMO to better, less expensive way to accomplish this is to make an independent 24v system. Yet another option is to use a 24v alt and two 12v batts and add some solenoids to that system to power things like your inverter while the truck is off, then you'll always have start power...the options are endless...
