i always thought they were the same, but is there a difference in a jake brake and an exhaust brake

While they both produce a restriction in exhaust flow it is the way they do it that is the difference. A jake brake mechanically changes the exhaust valve function, inside the engine, while and exhaust brake mechanically closes off the exhaust pipe. Jake brakes are common in the larger diesel engines and exhaust brakes are more common in the smaller engines
