Seems to be pretty common for 03's to have this. You can do a search for the fix... Something about stepper motors...

Try restarting the truck when it's warm (the engine) as the battery voltage will be higher. If all the needles are out, the gauges did not awaken. They (GM) set the startup voltage at something like 10.5 volts. If your cranking and the batteries are not sufficient, the gauges will not "wake up". IIRC, '03's had a flash update (TSB) to set the wake up voltage lower.
As a matter of maintenance, I would have the batteries tested with an electronic tester for a bad cell and I would also ensure that none of the battery cables are loose. The cables should not rotate by hand if they are tight enough. Also, the passenger side battery is notorious for leaking due to a "too long" bolt and the acid will corrode the cable connection (among other things.)

My 03 did that at 43,000 miles. Looking for the issue, I unhooked the batteries and nosed around, found nothing. BUT when i hooked the batteries back up, everything worked again....

Try it....
