Anyone used this, would this help in our trucks? I just like the idea of our oil not heating the coolant any more than nessesary and visa versa. Also like the idea of a clean bolt on application for an external oil cooler.

It is hard to find a place to mount an external cooler that gets cool ambient air. Anything behind the engine/trans is going to get hot air, I guess if it where mounted in the front horizontal to the ground with fans maybe this would work, it would take some testing for sure.

flex-a-lite makes oil coolers with built in fans and thermostats to control the fans operation witch allow mounting coolers in remote locations that dont get ambient air.

JMO, but don't mess with it if your truck is a daily driver. These engines get the oil extremely hot and the water-to-oil heat exchanger is a very efficient way to keep the temps in check. An overheating LBZ is almost unheard of.

Diesels run off of heat. The warmer they are the better they run.

To a point that is true, but you can defintely have too much of a "good" thing in this case. If you doubt this, just try blocking off your coolant lines and see how long it runs good  Personally I like mine to stay around 200 degrees F.

Dido

When you say heat your probably talking 70-80 deg ambient, we are talking more like 100-115+ ambient.

So would a cooler in-line of my by-pass filter help any or is this not really an issue with the LBZ? Didn't think it would hurt since I had a cooler sitting in my garage from other unfinished projects

Not necessary IMO. Oil temp follows coolant temp almost exactly because of the oil cooler. It does it's job well.

If you're running a bypass filter, adding an oil cooler to that path won't have enough effect, as the bypass oil only represents around 5% of the total oil circulated. Any oil cooler should be in the full flow path to effect the whole oil system.

Well its the amsoil one with the bypass filter and regular filter on the same external housing. Maybe I am wrong but the regular filter on that housing still see's full flow??
